Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was caught on a hot mic on Friday saying that President Trump's talk of making Canada the 51st U.S. state is "a real thing," local media reported.
Canadian public broadcaster CBC reported that Trudeau made those comments to business leaders and labor leaders in a closed-door session that was mistakenly carried by a loudspeaker.
Trudeau suggested Mr. Trump has floated the idea of annexing Canada because he wants access to the country's critical minerals.
"Mr. Trump has it in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and it is a real thing. In my conversations with him on…," Trudeau said of making Canada a U.S. state before the microphone cut out, according to CBC.
"They're very aware of our resources, of what we have and they very much want to be able to benefit from those," Trudeau reportedly said.
Trudeau's office did not immediately respond to the Associated Press' request for comment.
In a post on social platform X, Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labor, confirmed what Trudeau said.
"Yes, I can confirm that Trudeau said his assessment is that what Trump really wants is not action on fentanyl or immigration or even the trade deficit, what he really wants is to either dominate Canada or take it outright," McGowan wrote.

It seems that “ manifest destiny “ which was thought to have died 175 years ago shows signs of reawakening.
A territory, perhaps.
It’s as likely he’s using a false “hot mic” to create a narrative to rally support against Trump.
Well played sir!
Why would we want 2 more permanent Democrat Senators?
We don’t need new states, in fact there are a few I want to get rid of.
Trump has said the words “manifest destiny”, so I guess it’s officially back.
You see, Albertans are the most likely to support joining the US if they are given a chance to vote for that option. We’ve been an abused province by being made the scapegoats of Confederation and robbed of over a trillion dollars since 1905 when we joined Canada.
If Alberta leaves, it becomes very nearly impossible for the rest of the country to afford its socialism. Alberta would be fine, even if split into two states although I’d prefer it to remain intact and pretty.
Once Alberta leaves, the rest of the country would be sure to follow.
Then, Canadians would have votes in Congress, and they would vote in U.S. elections. No thanks.
Did Trump realize he could end up with over 30 million more democrats ,LOL

Simple. Just make Washington and Oregon counties of Canada. Either that or all of New England(better).
Let them keep their single payer healthcare. Anyone moving there for it we won’t miss.
It wouldn’t be that many. There are more conservatives than liberals in Canada, but conservatives don’t hold power over the government. The Federal government is mostly Quebec run, because you need to be bilingual in order to be promoted to management. It’s just one of the many ways that Quebec wages war against the rest of Canada.
A surprising number of Canadians would support the Second Amendment. Maybe not to the degree, initially, that conservatives support it but they would support it.
