Tesla's plummeting sales in Europe blamed on Elon Musk's politics

Sales of Teslas have plummeted across Europe, as car buyers turn on Elon Musk.

In Germany, new Tesla passenger car registrations dropped nearly 60 per cent year-on-year.

New data showed Tesla accounted for just 0.6 per cent of the market in Germany, Schmidt Automatic Research reported.

The auto research group suggested in a statement that "consumers in the market for an EV may well be reacting to Musk's comments where he hosted the leader of the AFD party to a live webcast".

The AFD is a far-right political party in Germany.

Tesla sales have been on a sharp decline in Germany over the past two years, going from close to 9000 sales in March 2023 to just 1277 last month.

The drop is even sharper in France, which recorded a 63 per cent drop in Tesla sales last month, compared to the previous January.

In Sweden, sales were down 44 per cent.

Tesla sales fell 38 per cent in Norway and 42 per cent in the Netherlands.

The drop was less muted in the UK, where Teslas fell eight per cent.

The fall for Tesla comes as electric car sales rise in Europe.

Musk has been vocal in his support for far right-wing parties in Germany and the UK, and scathing in his criticisms of the governments there.

IMO—THIS HAS NOT A THING TO DO WITH MUSK, OR HIS POLITICS.

THIS WAS A “YEAR OVER YEAR” COMPARISON & MUSK HAS BEEN DOING MASTERFUL THINGS POLITICALLY IN THE US FOR LESS THAN 3 WEEKS.

EUROPE HAS NOT GOT THE ELECTRIC POWER TO MAKE ALL THE CHANGES.

HEAVY MACHINERY PRODUCTION IN GERMANY HAS COLLAPSED.

THAT WAS THEIR MAINSTAY.

NOT ENOUGH “GREEN POWER” TO SUSTAIN THIS WORK.

MERKLE & COMPANY DESTROYED THEIR NUCLEAR POWER-—DYNAMITED THE FACILITIES-—DIDN’T JUST IDLE THEM.

NOW-—THEY HAVE TO BUILD ALL OVER AGAIN.....

AMAZING HOW STUPID THAT IS.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with the price of electricity in Germany...

Saving Europe from itself is FAR MORE IMPORTANT to Elon than a few billion more dollars.

Musk was asked about the possible losing sponsors or sales over his involvement in politics, and his answer was, “I don’t care!”

there are a lot more reasons than Musk for plummeting sales of electric vehicles.

EV sales are plummeting because people have caught on to all of its downfalls. Its not jut Tesla.

This article is pure crap. EV sales have been dropping long before Musk got politically active enough to piss Europeans off and stop buying Teslas.

Year-over-year comparisons are worthless for determining the effect of his recent actions.

Click bait, nothing more.

Fake news anyone?
Yup.
Top selling EV models in Europe right now are the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3.
Try again.

It's more likely the EV market is sated - anyone who thinks EVs are a good idea has already bought one.

They aren't going to expand that market until they address infrastructure and even then, not many can afford to wait an hour, or multiple hours, for a recharge - never mind can their electrical grid support expansion.

Musk is a sharp cookie so expect Tesla to move from pure electric to hybrid. Toyota has shown the way there ...

Frankly, I am surprised that Musk is doing this.
Tesla buyers are mostly virtue signaling liberals.
Musk recent activities has to hurt Tesla sales. Obviously, he cares more about the country than about the sales.

Germany cut its EV subsidy at the end of 2023. BEV sales went south, while hybrid and plugin hybrid sales increased.

What nonsense. This is part of the ongoing smear of Elon Musk. Car sales in general have been off due to the impact of Bidenonmics, and Los Angeles just went through a large fire -- some of us have heard about that /jk -- so Tesla's sedan sales in California have been off (Cybertruck has been selling well instead), less to do with the California single-party state's anti-Elon campaign that's been going on for a few years than it does with Biden's and Newsom's lousy economy.
Musk Derangement Syndrome is not entirely uncommon here on FR, so it should be familiar to all.
There was a decline in unsold new auto inventories from July to August, which isn't unusual when the model year changes, but there was no change from September to October. By November the inventory exceeded 3 million for the first time since the COVID (new vehicle inventories were 20% higher). As the EV-bashers often point out, most of those unsold vehicles were gasoline powered.
Europe's (both the EU and UK) phasing out gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles. The US and European economy has been down since the Great Pandemic (HTML really needs a "quake" tag), and having a war going on in Europe as well as the Biden Crime Family installed by the Deep State, generating such a large unsold inventory -- exceeded only by the COVID sabotage -- is really quite an achievement.

Actually overall California EV sales were about the same in 2024 as 2023. Musk lost some market share to other OEMs.

I saw the funniest thing the other day. Some lefty broad was driving a Tesla in front of me and had a sticker on the back:

Talk about confused.
