The story of the first two weeks of President Donald Trump’s second term is one of a hostile takeover of government power with relatively little pushback. And those with the most power to change Trump’s course in the near term — congressional Republicans — have been especially meek, even as he’s trampled on their prerogatives and past ideals.
The upshot: The party of limited government and federalism is tacitly green-lighting a more autocratic chief executive.
And there’s little sign Republicans will feel compelled to change it up, given that their party’s base has increasingly embraced the idea that what Trump says, goes.
The courts have begun to try to check Trump’s power somewhat, including on birthright citizenship and his federal funding freeze. But they generally move at a glacial pace. That means much of the power to resist the president right now lies with the Republicans who control Congress and could seemingly try to guide him in a different direction.
But they generally haven’t been willing to speak up and try to force his hand, even when Trump’s actions diluted their power and ran contrary to the principles they once espoused.....
But instead, Republican lawmakers have increasingly just stood by and watched the Trump (and Musk) show. My colleagues Hannah Knowles and Liz Goodwin on Sunday labeled it the “incredible shrinking Congress.” The New York Times’ Annie Karni wrote last week that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) had become “less like the autonomous head of a coequal branch of government and more like a junior partner to President Trump.”
Part of the reason for the congressional GOP’s disappearing act is that lawmakers have seen what criticizing Trump has done to their colleagues, and they’ve lost the will to fight him, at least publicly.

Washington Compost desperately trying to create dissension in the GOP ranks. Paging Mitt Romney....oh....he’s not there anymore.
Beginning to see what the left feared most, dismantling of USAID. That was the politicians, their hacks, and the lefts golden goose.
As usual what the left claims of the right, the left is doing
Don’t fear the reaper 😂
Absolutely hilarious to see a far leftist in the media, whine and cry and try to tease and trifger Republicans - who support everything Trump is doing - into somehow “stopping” him. It’s not going to happen. Your nightmare is going to get worse every single day. Cry more.
Laughing at how the Deep State is claiming that having formerly unaccountable bureaucracy answerable to elected officials is a “power grab”.
Returning power to the people is the opposite of a power grab.
No sale on this one, comrade.
The executive power shall be invested in the President. He shall take care that the laws are faithfully executed. Fraud is not legal anywhere at any time.
Lets do a little math exercise concerning USAID!
They give away 40 billion US taxpayer dollars per year.
They were established in 1961
That is 64 years of giving away US taxpayer money.
40 billion x 64 = 2.56 TRILLION
Do you know how many cities there are in all of America?
according to google 19,500 total cities in the US.
If you gave every single incorporated city in the US (including ALL of those dying towns you drive through on road trips)
that would equal 131 million for EVERY SINGLE TOWN IN AMERICA!!!!!!!
Imagine how great America would be if we had spent that money on ourselves instead of funding transgender comic books in the congo or whatever!
The incredible shrinking Congress is actually the incredible shrinking influence of agencies funding NGOs as cutouts for the political money train.
I am sure that this stunning article pleased and motivated their readers…both of them.
You are probably off with your math, I would be surprised if in the 1st of those 64 years their budget was over 1 billion dollars, probably didn’t reach that until the 70s and after the Vietnam war.
meek acquiescence???
It may be meek, but it is not acquiescence to power grabs, but Constitutional restoration.
As opposed to enthusiastic approval by democrats of Biden’s power grabs and lawlessness.
Eliminating departments and paring government is somehow a power grab???
“[A] hostile takeover of government power”? No. It’s a diminution of Federal government power.
Ah. The Leftist Media is trying a NEW tactic: Characterizing the GOP as lazy, spineless slobs who meekly go along with The Orange Tyrant.
While it is true there are some who are spineless, and there are some like Murkowski and Collins who are wholly Leftist with an “R” in front of their name, most are going along because they understand Trump was elected with a mandate.
The Leftist Media is trying to use the tactic a grasping and manipulative woman might use on a pliable and unwilling man:
“What is this? Are you such a pussy you are going to just sit there and take what that person is doing to you? Why don’t you fight back? Haven’t you got any balls? You should be ashamed of yourself. What a wimp.”
That is the equivalent of what they are are doing with this approach.
I like the way you frame that. America is, and has been, a generous country and would like to help others where we can. It is in our national nature.
But I believe this should be largely in the private hands of the citizenry, clergy, and industry, not in the hands of the government.
What we see in the USAID is completely out of control. I had no idea they had over 10,000 employees, including many contractors who are overseas and not even citizens of the USA.
I have no way of knowing what the historical budget of that department is. But I am simply responding to the talking point of the left that 40 billion.. is only a tiny fraction of what the US spends each year. But when you take that 40 billion number that they are saying is so little, and stretch it out of decades it becomes trillions, not even taking into account interest on those trillions compounding.
I would like reporters to go to any inner city slum, any trailer park or dying small town in America and ask literally ANYONE if they would rather 40 billion EVERY YEAR be sent to foreign countries or that the money should be spent in their communities!
weeping over RINOs losing power.
The President has a full time putting out th dumpster fires left behind by Biden, Obama, Bush(es), establishment republican liars and the Deep, Dark State.
He is wielding his powers like Solomon at the moment IMHO.
oh and the rats never complained about an autocratic Barry Hussein but cheered him on.
and if you’ve ever been trifgered, you know what a painful experience that can be! (tribute to Ron Sweed, The Ghoul)
Exactly. We are a generous people, and we should be. But we are currently broke, and getting more broke with every passing day.
We are paying over $600 billion ANNUALLY on INTEREST on our debt. That is unsustainable. We need to change that, and it looks like Trump is going to take a stab at that.
Thank God.
Like an adult with a child on an airplane that depressurizes at altitude, if the adult doesn’t put on the oxygen mask first before attending to the child, if our government folds before we put the oxygen mask on, we won’t be giving help to anyone, including our own citizenry, which should absolutely come first in any case.
