The military helicopter that collided with a regional jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in a crash that killed all 67 people aboard both aircraft was a UH-60 Black Hawk, considered the “workhorse” of Army aviation.
The helicopter is a “utility tactical transport” aircraft — used for everything from air assault to relief operations — that the Army says it has relied on for every major operation around the world for more than four decades.
First introduced in the Army in 1979, the aircraft is generally considered safe and has a strong track record for reliability and survivability in combat and transport missions, said Timothy A. Loranger, an aviation attorney and former aircraft mechanic.
Sikorsky, a subsidiary of the aerospace and defense giant Lockheed-Martin, says it has built more than 5,000 of the helicopters for 36 countries.
The Army has said it expects the aircraft to be a key part of its fleet for the next three decades.
The Black Hawk that collided with American Eagle Flight 5342 was from Bravo Company, 12th Aviation Battalion, out of Davison Army Airfield in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and it was on a training mission, the Army said.
Military officials described the three soldiers on the aircraft as a very experienced crew that included an instructor pilot with more than 1,000 flight hours.
The officials said the training mission was a routine annual evaluation of the pilot’s ability to fly at night. The crew was well aware of the route and the rules in the airspace around the airport, the officials said.

Her parents are both doctors and she majored in biology. Half of doctors have a doctor parent. It used to be father and son. They are medical school legacies, bought in. She probably didn't meet the academic requirements even to be bought in, which are still high. Also easier to get in if you are black (even 100 years ago with black colleges), from like MS or WV or a instate admission from a small town or rural area.
However, she seemed to have connections to get the white house social aide position and flying the VIPs out in case of nuclear war. Senator Robb was a marine officer social aide who married Lyndon Johnson's daughter.
Sounds like Blackhawks are used to train DEIs in the most DANGEROUS flight environment in the US. Probably better to use a simulator.
She failed.
Maybe they need to reopen the base at Mineral Wells (Fort Woulters) and use it to learn to fly helicopters at night over west Texas and Oklahoma. Just watch out for the windmills.
Just goes to show that eating carpet isn’t a good skill for making a good pilot.
Hopefully, this gets someone to reconsider women in combat, etc. She took out a whole commercial airliner.
A disgusting ignorant comment.
Made from behind a screen. Doubtful you’d say that directly to her family.
The woman blackhawk pilot went cuckoo. The copter was at the wrong altitude and 2 guys from the airport, one named Mohammed, have been arrested for releasing a video showing the blackhawk flying right into the airliner.
It’s a truthful comment. Eating carpet is not a good measure for hiring someone to fly multimillion dollar aircraft. DEI hires are bad.
Hiring someone strictly because they eat carpet is bad.
Eating carpet doesn’t necessarily make one a bad pilot.
The UH-60 was flown straight for a couple nautical miles into the jet (t-bone) without any hesitation perfectly knocking it out. The jet landing lights would have lit up the crew miles out. The helo was off by 200 feet. The crew chief job is to look out. It’s inexplicable and incomprehensible how this happened. It’s manslaughter and a military criminal offense.
I agree. Unfortunately, that appears to be what DEI is all about. Homos, trans, skin color, and 72 genders seem to be the way of the world. Skills don’t matter.
That crap is going away now. All hail President Trump.
I doubt she or the warrant officer are going to be court marshalled.
They were at 200 feet approximately 30 seconds before the crash.
At 200 AGL, the jet’s landing lights could easily blend into urban light clutter. If the aircraft were generally heading toward each other, the relative position of the landing lights would change little, making them hard to differentiate from other lights. Add in the fact that depth perception is significantly degraded at night and in my experience, even more using NVDs.
It is amazing to me that 3 people were in the BH...and ONE could not multitask enough to avoid the airliner. Something just seems odd about that.
Except... you don’t know anything about her to that extent. Nothing. It’s pure ignorance.
Why are you and others so fixated on sexual acts and/or the body.of this dead female?
There have been comments about her chest, her breasts, her hips, etc. One consistently ignorant poster referred to her as “it”.
I mean, there are multiple posters that have made these comments.
They were short a crew chief. Whoever approved this mission short a crew member deserves some of the blame.
They were at near right angle courses.
Yes, it almost looked intentional.
Now they took the video down and it’s the clearest one I’ve seen.
I don’t see how the blackhawk pilot could not have seen the airliner.
According to current BlackHawk types that mission called for another officer to lookout on the left side.
