President Trump announced he is pausing U.S. tariffs targeting imports from Mexico for a month after the country's president agreed to send 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to combat the flow of fentanyl.

Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday that he and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum "agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period." The pause, he said, will allow "negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico."

The president wrote that he had a "very friendly conversation" with Sheinbaum in which she "agreed to immediately

I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country. We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ā€œdealā€ between our two Countries.

This is what I don’t get about Trump’s critics when it comes to tariffs. Trump does not want to impose tariffs for the sake of imposing tariffs. This isn’t 1890. He is doing it strategically to force certain behavior. It seems to be working. Trump’s critics blindly fall into the economic theory argument that tariffs are always bad. They are good when they force Mexico to secure the border. They are good when they force Columbia and Venezuela to take back their illegal migrants.

Reminds me of that line in Forrest Gump….. Trump threatens tariffs on Mexico and ā€œjust like thatā€ the Mexicans send their army to clean up their border. The Mexicans folded before the Democrats and leftist media had time to come up with talking points how bad Trumps actions were. The Canadians might take a few days to maybe a week to capitulate. Trudeau will likely resign or have a vote of no confidence in the Parliament very soon.
