It's been just under two weeks since Elon Musk stepped into his role at the Department of Government Efficiency, and he's already bringing his Silicon Valley drive to Washington.
"DOGE is working 120 hours a week. Our bureaucratic opponents optimistically work 40 hours a week. That is why they are losing so fast," Musk posted to X on Sunday.
Less than a day earlier, he had extolled the virtues of weekend work.
"Very few in the bureaucracy actually work the weekend, so it's like the opposing team just leaves the field for 2 days!" he wrote on X.
That's 17 hours and 8 minutes of work a day, including Saturday and Sunday, as one X user noted in the comments.
Musk is known for his relentless work ethic. He's said he works 120-hour weeks and expects his employees to work long hours, too.
When he officially took control of Twitter in October 2022, he immediately mandated 80-hour workweeks. But whether his hard-charging tech executive mentality will work in the more staid realm of government is an open question.
An operational efficiency expert told Business Insider that Musk's approach might be the best way to get DOGE quickly up to speed.
"Musk's tweet underscores his well-known philosophy on work ethic and the inefficiencies of bureaucracy," Shannon Copeland, CEO of SIB, a cost-cutting firm, told BI by text. "While a 120-hour workweek isn't a practical or sustainable solution for most, the principle behind it resonates. Companies that prioritize efficiency, automation, and proactive cost management will always outperform those weighed down by bureaucracy."

eight sleep company (never heard of them) is shipping their pods to DOGE (or has at least offered to do it)
I love the way Musk taunts them.
Can you imagine how corrupt a department of government efficiency would be under a Democrat administration?
I used to work 70hr work weeks, but I got paid overtime. I work salary now and 60hr work weeks many weeks a year. I couldn’t do 120 hr weeks. I wouldn’t do 120hr weeks without being well compensated for it.
Career Treasury officials are breaking the law every hour of every day by approving payments that are fraudulent or do not match the funding laws passed by Congress.
This needs to stop NOW!

That it. Musk Cyborg status confirmed
Apparently, those who require VERY LITTLE SLEEP are capable of working LONG HOURS.
My best use would have been 6 hr/day, 6 days/wk.
LOL, I’m 82, I haven’t worked for about 30 years. When I did work a lot of overtime I saved it for comp time, so the IRS wouldn’t get it.
I used to work 105 hrs a week, I don’t think I could do 120
I guess that’s part of why President Trump and Musk get along so well.
They’re both workaholics.
The problem with O/T is that most benefits did not increase appropriately.
And then, there is the working smarter, not harder meme [true for many IP type jobs].
When I started in high tech you had to work at the office. There was no wifi or work from home systems. All were big large servers and you had to connect to them.
Working 80 hrs a week was normal place for 30 + years.
I did 35 days straight, didn’t count the hours LOL

120 hr weeks only leaves you with 6 hrs. a night for sleep - figuring the extra .8+ hrs. each day get taken up with eating, bathroom breaks, showers, etc. Long term few people can maintain that without health issues. Now, 100 hrs. per week lets you get enough sleep, too.
I once had a job where I worked 80 hours a week. I considered that lifestyle to be ridiculous. I quit and started my own business. Best thing that ever happened to me. Something I likely would not have done had I not been motivated by what I didn’t like.
I did a fair amount of Telnet-Ing from home to Unix systems decades ago using my POTS line at home to do homework at college, then later professional work. I could do a fair amount of development on a local Linux machine at home, but ultimately had to do some work on the UNIX machine that was on the work LAN. Most days I worked at the office. But weekend work or working while sick was done from home with Telnet.
