Following lawsuit, McDonald's no longer requiring Hispanic heritage for its Hispanic college scholarships

To settle a conservative group’s discrimination lawsuit, McDonald’s said it will no longer require Hispanic heritage for students who apply to its decades-old Hispanic college scholarship program.

American Alliance for Equal Rights filed a lawsuit in January in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee against McDonald’s and the International Scholarship and Tuition Services, the Nashville-based company that administers the fast food chain’s HACER scholarships.

The lawsuit said the Chicago-based fast food giant discriminated against non-Hispanics by not making its HACER scholarship available to everyone. That same month, McDonald’s announced it would roll back its diversity goals, joining other major companies like Moline-based John Deere and Walmart.

McDonald’s on Friday said it disagreed with AAER’s claim but will settle the lawsuit. There was no financial exchange as part of the settlement, nor any admission of wrongdoing by McDonald’s, according to the company.

But how is McDonalds supposed to discriminate on the basis of race if it can’t discriminate on the basis of race?

Sort of mixed feeling on this. I’d like to donate scholarship money to my alma mater with the restriction that only English speaking white males could receive funds for scholarship. I might want to narrow that to only include beer drinking non athletes. My wife would love for only practicing Catholics to get the money she sends to her university.

Many, many moons ago, I applied for and received scholarship to St. Olaf College in Minnesota. The scholarship was available only to students of Scandanavian ancestry, which I 100% fit, though it would have been difficult to prove. The scholarship was funded by an endowment that limited applicants to such ancestry. I was unable to use the grant since I couldn’t afford the rest of the costs, so I couldn’t accept it.

I believe that that this was a legitimate constraint on applicants, likely based on the ancestry of the grantor. I suppose that McDonalds, being a business might not be allowed to place an ethnic constraint, but it seems to me that a private individual should be allowed to do it.

I’d say that if McDonalds was willing to fund scholarships for all ethnic groups, then it would be fair to limit the applicants. That said I’m also not sure I agree with the ruling though. McDonalds is a private entity and should be able to make those kinds of decisions without government interference.

Anton — Have you considered giving a scholarship directly to a worthy local kid who otherwise can’t afford college? Speak with the math and science teachers at your local high school; they’re sure to know of several students who meet your criteria. Same for your wife: she could ask a favorite priest or fellow parishioners to suggest a suitable recipient.

Imagine the blow back if McDonald’s had a “White Heritage Scholarship” program. There would be instant calls for a national boycott.

About time these race-based programs were dismantled. American Alliance for Equal Rights is doing a yeoman’s job calling out, filing lawsuits and justifiably putting and end to these race-based scholarships.

Yea, that what I did when the kids friends and acquaintances were that age.

That is also how I got to college. My grandmother’s sister died in child birth and her husband remarried but kept our family in his generosity. I guess he wasn’t really related to me, but he gave me a couple thousand dollars back when tuition was $175 per quarter and I started college. I had no family money or scholarships and we didn’t borrow money back then.

Somebody has never looked at scholarships by private entities.
There are lots of them for white people and people should be allowed to make any parameters they want (As long as the government isn’t involved.)

My guess is McDonalds lawyers said jurys love to rule against large corporations, settling would be less expensive.

I think that's been illegal for quite some time, but I'm not sure.

If I had the money I'd like to create some scholarships too. If I could, I'd restrict them to certain majors of study and from certain counties.

The assumption seems to be that ALL people whose ancestry can be traced back to Spain are poor and oppressed, and that all Whites are rich oppressors.

Same with every other privileged “victim” group. This assumption must be quashed! There are only individuals. There are no groups. The “groups” are fictitious, imaginary and artificial.

I should hope that they are still allowed to do so. In 1966 when I was starting to look into scholarships for college, I was told of one that was available only to applicants named Smith.

How would they define “Hispanic”? The region known by the ancient name Hispania included what is now Portugal, so are those whose roots are in Portugal or its former colonies eligible? How about Basques who live north of the French border but speak the same language as those living to the south in Spain? Or what if your ancestors hailed from Andorra the Balearic Islands, or the cities of Melilla and Ceuta, which are Spanish but located in Africa??

FIND candidates that meet your specifications & donate directly to them-—and MONITOR their progress.

TOO MUCH $$$$$$$ is siphoned off by any organization, IMO.

Personally I think private companies should be permitted to discriminate. I know, I know that ship has sailed.
