The Black Hawk military helicopter involved in Wednesday’s midair collision in Washingon, DC, was training to evacuate government officials in the case of a catastrophic event when it crashed into an American Airlines regional passenger plane – and was involved with a catastrophe of its own.
Jonathan Koziol, chief of staff for the Army’s aviation directorate, told reporters on Thursday the pilots were training for a scenario when “something really bad happens in this area, and we need to move our senior leaders.” That evacuation would be part of what Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described as “a continuity of government mission.”
To carry out such an evacuation, Koziol added, pilots “do need to be able to understand the environment, the air traffic, the routes, to ensure the safe travel of our senior leaders throughout our government.”

Why were they practicing this now, I mean don’t they everyday prepare for something horrible happening to our elected officials
Was there anything unusual about any of the passengers on the airliner?
Training failure!!
Back to the simuilator.
There was a simulator wasn’t there?
If they practice everyday, then this would not have been an unusual practice flight. Right?
“Why were they practicing this now, I mean don’t they everyday prepare for something horrible happening to our elected officials”
Yes, like the release of the FBI files.
It was practically a regular sight when I lived in North Carolina, to see Air Force One doing “touch and go” training at the airport near Greensboro. One would think there would be something similar with the military aircraft in D.C.
Who arranges these training sessions?
as the saying goes, “the reason so many die of medical malpractice is because of doctors practicing on them” L.Star
Hopefully Hegseth will put an end to this silliness.
DOG — discontinuance...
She only had “over 500” hours as a helicopter pilot-—and had worked in a social position in the Biden White House until quite recently. I’m guessing that over 450 of the hours were logged more than two years ago and less than 80 in the past two years.
Photogenic so give her an “appropriate” posting, and then keep her in D.C., tossing her into a place that might be appropriate for some very fine-tuned training, but probably not the place to knock the rust off. Add in an air-traffic controller doing the work of two, and one or two other things going wrong and one doesn’t need a rogue computer to explain what was up.
The good news, is that ain’t gonna happen again, at least on Trump’s watch.
so I take it she is not to blame for the collision and all the death
Chain of command heads need to roll. Brig time. People are dead. Good people.
Oh they’re gonna roll.
“Was there anything unusual about any of the passengers on the airliner?”
Three people were on the helo. Two were already identified. My question is who was the third person on the helo and why isn’t their name mentioned?
I’m ambivalent about the evacuation of the VIPs. If they get American nuked, we should at least get a new government out of the deal. The last thing I want is for these A-holes to emerge from a bunker three weeks later and assert that they are back in charge. Not after I’ve been up top side, shooting it out with the neighbors, eating expired macaroni and cheese.
They should stand there like a man, and go down like the captain of the ship.
