Washington (PTI) -- US President Donald Trump has signed a presidential memorandum to set up a 30,000-person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay to detain “high-priority criminal aliens.”

The Guantanamo Bay facility, which has so far been used to hold terrorists, will now also house illegal immigrants with criminal records.

The signing took place on Wednesday, with Trump directing the Departments of Defence and Homeland Security to prepare the facility.  According to the memorandum, he ordered the expansion of the Migrant Operations Center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to accommodate “high-priority criminal aliens” and address related enforcement needs.

“Most people don’t even know about it.

We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people,” Trump said at a White House event.

“Some of them are so bad, we don’t even trust their home countries to hold them. Because we don’t want them coming back, so we’re going to send them to Guantanamo,” he said.

“This will double our capacity immediately. It’s a tough place to get out of. Today’s signing brings us one step closer to eradicating the scourge of migrant crime in our communities once and for all,” he added.

With this, Trump has ramped up efforts to remove illegal immigrants from the country, a major poll promise.

He said the memorandum was issued to halt the border invasion, dismantle criminal cartels, and restore national sovereignty.

Why at guantanamo. I get why jihadists who weren’t captured on US soil would be sent to guantanamo so they didn’t have ‘rights’ from our judicial system. What is the value of sending people from US soil there?

What is the value of sending people from US soil there?

The Democrats cannot get a judge from Hawaii to order them released.

Nor can the prisoners get in contact with sympathetic lawyers of the ACLU or other Leftist organizations.

The prisoners are foreigners under US military control outside the United States. The conventional notions of "due process" and "Constitutional rights" do not apply to them under the circumstances.

Prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are subject to the Laken Riley Act, which gives federal authorities broader power to deport immigrants in the U.S. illegally who have been accused of crimes. A conviction is not required.

In 2009, the D.C. Circuit held in Kiyemba v. Obama (Kiyemba I) that Guantanamo detainees who were determined not to be enemy combatants but who could not be returned to their home country did not have a right to be released into the United States. The majority held that habeas courts lack authority to compel the transfer of a non-citizen detainee into the United States, even if that detainee is found to be unlawfully held and the government has been unable to effect his release to a foreign county.

If we bought Greenland, we’d have room for a lot more.

If you were an illegal and knew that the possibility existed to be sent to Guantanamo, what would you do?
