The rear section of a passenger aircraft caught fire at an airport in South Korea on Tuesday (Jan 28), forcing the evacuation of 176 people on board, authorities said.
The Air Busan plane, an Airbus A321, was set to fly to Hong Kong from Gimhae International Airport in southeastern Busan but caught fire at around 1015pm local time, the transport ministry said in a statement.
A total of 169 passengers and seven flight attendants and staff were evacuated down inflatable slides, it said.
The statement gave no information about the cause of the fire other than to say it broke out in the rear of the aircraft.
The National Fire Agency said three people were slightly injured during the evacuation. The fire was completely extinguished by 11.31pm local time, it said.

I fly Delta’s affiliate, Korean Air when in Korea. I feel safer.
I’ve flown in shuttle plains in Vietnam and other Asian countries. I joke that I draw the limit when they have duct tape on the windows.

Here’s a good thing to do, don’t get on any South Korean airliners.
I feel Korean Air is safe. I’ve flown them several times, Soul to Boston was the longest.
The problem is that they also fly to the major cities in China. Who knows what you catch on the Wuhan route.
My first suspicion is a catastrophic APU failure = Rear end of the airplane and on the ground.
The fuel capacity of the Airbus A321 depends on whether operators install auxiliary tanks.
A321 internal fuel capacity is 6,350 gallons, 7,930 gals with modifications.
A321neo holds 6,260 gallons of fuel.
A321XLR holds 8,700 gal.
The firefighters did a good job preventing that full load of fuel from going up.
My first suspicion is a Lithium Ion batter fire.
My late father who was a retired flight engineer on C-141s said jet engines ingesting birds was no big thing. He declared that “it plucks and fries them at the same time.”
