Michigan Democrat Sen. Gary Peters announces will not seek reelection

Michigan Democrat Sen. Gary Peters announced Tuesday that will not seek reelection next year.

His departure is expected to result in a highly contested race for the Senate seat in the battleground state.

The 66-year-old Peters is unexpectedly retiring after just two terms.

He led the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee through a successful 2022 election cycle in which his party won a number of hotly contested races to keep control of the upper chamber. But two years later, Republicans flipped several highly competitive seats, costing Democrats their Senate majority, according to the Associated Press.

This certainly will be a contested election - hopefully the GOP can field a quality conservative.

Don’t be surprised if a preferred Dearborn migrant wins the seat.

The Michigan state Senate was not on the ballot in 2024.

The next election cycle for the Michigan state Senate is in 2026.

Maybe he is talking about the Michigan state House? It flipped in 2024

“Just two terms”? What, he won’t be another Senator-for-Life?

Ok, Peters is a Federal Senator, not a Michigan state Senate senator.

Mike Rogers narrowly lost to Slotkin—a known sitting incumbent—and will likely run. He’s an R, but considered a RINO.

James would be better. Either would stand a good chance in this era of Trump, even in Michigan. Whitmer would want the seat if she didn’t have higher aspirations.

This is big news. He isn’t a lifer like those that run in their 80’s. Perhaps he’s smart enough to not want to be in the minority-read the tea leaves.

James is a 2 time loser. Third time the charm? We need a top-tier candidate and there doesn’t seem to be one on the horizon. The thought of a sacrificial lamb stepping up is discouraging. Michigan turned red and we have an opportunity.

He will go for Governor which will be interesting because the current mayor of Detroit is going to run as an independent. The horrific Whitmer is term limited.

Another reason to support term limits.

Don’t be surprised if a preferred Dearborn migrant wins the seat.

Then the dims will change the rules so that he/she can still hold office even if they've been deported.

Mike Rogers narrowly lost to Slotkin”

One of four Senate seats the rats stole in 24. Rogers was ahead until the usual 3 a.m. ballot dump in Detroit.
