Victor Davis Hanson: Trump and His New Frenemies, Abroad and at Home
American Greatness ^ | 27 Jan, 2025 | Victor Davis Hanson

In an address to the World Economic Forum, President Trump criticized Europe's regulatory and environmental policies, advocating for U.S.-led free-market capitalism to enhance Western prosperity.

President Trump recently gave a video talk to the World Economic Forum (WEF) assemblage in Davos.

He expressed fondness for Europe. He praised many for their attendance—and then tore into the evils of hyperregulation, high taxes, radical environmentalism, and the DEI/ESG commissariat of both the prior Biden administration and indeed the European Union.

One might have thought the attendees’ heads would have exploded when Trump referred to oil as “liquid gold.” And he topped that by referring to the venerated Green New Deal as the “Green New Scam.”

“I terminated the ridiculous and incredibly wasteful Green New Deal—I call it the ‘Green New Scam,’ withdrew from the one-sided Paris Climate Accord, and ended the insane and costly electric vehicle mandate.”

But then a strange thing happened.

The questions from international bankers and financiers that followed were not all that critical. In fact, one could characterize them as curious and carefully encouraging.

So, what prompts the polite European reception to such green and economic heresy?

A careful hearing of Trump’s entire speech would reveal it was not confrontational as much as aspirational. He was trying to envision a new European partnership—albeit one under American leadership.

“Under our leadership, America is back and open for business . . . So, you know I’m trying to be constructive because I love Europe. I love the countries of Europe.”

The U.S. economy has grown to nearly twice the size of the European Union’s since its inception more than two decades ago. Indeed, over 20 years, the gross domestic product of both was roughly comparable.

European energy costs are constantly soaring, especially given radical green restrictionism and the disruption of...

Will the leftists running the EU wake up? I seriously doubt they will give up their stranglehold on the economy until there is an overwhelming revolt.

“During the Biden years, Western allies abroad felt they had to fall in line with a strange, quirky new America.”

This is a VERY IMPORTANT point and applies to much more than just European countries. I, very strongly, suspect that there were HUGE numbers of phone calls, directed from Biden’s Whitehouse, telling the Europeans to comply, OR ELSE. Likewise, no doubt, the exact same thing directed at US corporations - comply, or else. I never thought that our corporate leaders actually believed any of the DEI garbage, for example, or really believed the Green New Deal garbage, but they knew they had better comply, OR ELSE.

...and one thing we now see confirms this - the very quick retreat from DEI once Trump came in.

Did VDH ever come around on Ukraine? Does he still believe as he did in March of 2022? Does he still believe that Putin is on a revanchist mission of reconstituting the Soviet Union? Does VDH still believe Putin has German and French territorial ambitions?

That’s good to hear. I greatly respected his opinion prior to 3/22. I have five of his books and was shocked when he was duped by the obvious neocon lie about why Putin was forced by NATO to start the SMO.

I respect VDH’s intellect.

I just could never give him my full trust.

Maybe geography matters.

He certainly isn’t east coast establishment like the National Review crowd which is being forced into survival mode to pretend they are not neocons and globalists at their core.

And he is certainly not California establishment which is all far left.

But there is some establishment bias in his analysis, maybe it is statism.

...so you think NATO and UkieNazis were perfectly innocent and Putin is 100% to blame?

One of the big enablers of the DEI madness is the forced infiltration of corporate boards by leftists from government. Trump needs to hammer the practice from the bully pulpit and encourage corporations to purge former politicians and bureaucrats from their boards.

The exact OPPOSITE! NATO and the corrupt warmongering globohomos who’ve been running DC and NATO are 100% to blame.

NATO, the preeminent destabilizing force in the world, should have been disbanded 20 years ago. The reason NATO should have been disbanded 20 years ago is now readily apparent to even the most brain dead neocon stooge.

Ping! Out to the Victor Davis Hanson list

Trump trashed past American censorship, political orthodoxies, deficit spending, inflation, and high interest. He summed up the Biden four-year detour as culpable and wrongheaded.

“President Biden totally lost control of what was going on in our country.”

Another classic article from the pen of Prof Hanson.

It’s beginning to take shape.
We have seen it here- strictly political “revolutions” happen more slowly.
