Donald Trump's special envoy slaps down NATO boss over pledge that Ukraine will be accepted into the alliance

Donald Trump’s special envoy yesterday publicly slapped down Nato’s chief over the idea that Ukraine could be admitted to the alliance.

Richard Grenell told secretary-general Mark Rutte he would ‘run into a big buzz saw in America’ if, as Mr Rutte suggested, he tried to make it happen.

The spat broke out during an annual Ukraine breakfast on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The event laid bare divisions between those in Mr Trump’s new administration who are pushing for early peace talks with Russia to end the war and others including European ministers who say Vladimir Putin must first be pegged back and weakened.

This can’t be true

Zeepers continue to tell us that NATO never considered Ukraine for membership, and never would consider it. Whatever George Bush, any US or EU politician, or every NATO sec. general has said about “path to membership” should be ignored.

And that’s why we needed Ric Grenell in this adminstration. He tells these clowns how it’s going to be.

“When we have leaders who are going to talk about more war we need to make sure that those leaders are spending the right amount of money.”

That’s gonna leave a mark. He smacked that pansy Eurotrash creep down.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine was not the unprovoked attack the war-enthusiasts pretend it was.

All NATO had to do to avoid the Russia conflict was keep its promise to refrain from expanding NATO.

It started in 1990 when James Baker promised Gorbachev that NATO would not expand one inch further eastward if Russia agreed to the reunification of Germany, thereby officially ending WW II.

Ouch, thats got to sting... - “‘You cannot ask the American people to expand the umbrella of Nato when the current members aren’t paying their fair share.’

And in a pointed dig at Mr Rutte, a former prime minister of the Netherlands, he said: ‘That includes the Dutch, who need to step up.

‘When we have leaders who are going to talk about more war we need to make sure that those leaders are spending the right amount of money.’”

Europe is free to guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and fight against Russia.

Just let them in the EU and use the mutual defense clause:

https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=LEGISSUM:mutual_defence

Leave us out of it.

And Mr Grenell, speaking by videolink from California, told the meeting: ‘You’re going to run into a big buzz saw on America if we have the Nato secretary general talking about having Ukraine to Nato.

‘The American people are the ones that are paying for the defence.

‘You cannot ask the American people to expand the umbrella of Nato when the current members aren’t paying their fair share.’

And in a pointed dig at Mr Rutte, a former prime minister of the Netherlands, he said: ‘That includes the Dutch, who need to step up.

‘When we have leaders who are going to talk about more war we need to make sure that those leaders are spending the right amount of money.’

Guess this explains why President Trump has just determined that the EU nations “Fair Share” is now upped to 5% of GDP instead of his previous 2% of GDP

“Zeepers continue to tell us that NATO never considered Ukraine for membership, and never would consider it. Whatever George Bush, any US or EU politician, or every NATO sec. general has said about “path to membership” should be ignored.”

It’s really annoying - they just flat-out LIE about the above in order to push their version of history. There are a few legitimate conservatives here who are pro-Ukraine, and they have the integrity to say that Ukraine joining NATO is none of Russia’s business, meaning they don’t deny it’s in the works. As to what they say, Russia makes it their business, just as we would if Mexico were getting set to allow Chinese bases and missiles on our Southern border.

So they sit in their plush offices many thousands of miles away from the conflict and say Russia’s attack on Ukraine was “totally unprovoked” - what happens in Ukraine is none of Russia’s business.

Like if an enemy alliance armed with nuclear weapons was making preparations to set up shop on an island 90 miles from the US coast, at the mouth of a vital waterway - that would be none of our business, right? Oh wait…

Or if Panama signed a treaty with China to co-operate the Panama Canal. None of our business.

Actually...

I’d keep NATO membership for Ukraine on the table for the time being. It makes for a pretty large bargaining chip, if naught else.

To be honest, however, making that concession probably blows up the deal, as I see no other practical way to guarantee Ukrainian security / sovereignty. Z-man MIGHT concede that, but if he does, I expect his own people to take him out.
