San Francisco’s gourmet doughnut cafe George’s Donuts & Merriment is receiving online backlash just weeks after opening due to a sizable donation its co-owner’s startup made to President Donald Trump’s inaugural committee.
Hims & Hers, a San Francisco-headquartered telehealth company co-founded by George’s Donuts co-owner Andrew Dudum, recently made a $1 million donation to Trump’s inaugural committee, according to a report by the San Francisco Chronicle (Dudum is also the CEO of Hims). But despite the donation coming directly from Dudum’s health startup, the fallout over the large contribution is now extending to the cafe, with a barrage of negative reviews hitting its Yelp and Google pages. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)
“Oh gosh! $1 million donations to Trump by this cafe’s owners? That’s too much!! Will spend my money elsewhere from now on,” Ocean F. wrote on George’s Donuts’ Yelp page, though the review has since been removed.
Yelp is monitoring George’s Donuts amid a pour of one-star reviews from individuals who shared they would not “support a business that supports Trump.” The elegant West Portal cafe has likewise received a handful of one-star reviews on Google within the past 24 hours, although most of the recent low reviews do not share any feedback. SFGATE reached out to George’s Donuts for comment but did not hear back by publication.
Dudum thanked Hims Chief Operating Officer Melissa Baird, who attended the inauguration event, on Tuesday with a post he shared on X. The post included a photo of Baird, who posed alongside Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Trump nominated to be his secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Dudum continued by mentioning a commitment he says he shares with Trump and Kennedy to address the U.S. obesity epidemic.

I mean it’s San Francisco. 🤷♂️
Sure- push another business out of SF- makes sense
How many of these are present customers? Most of them probably go to Tofu Hut (h/t Matt Groening) or some such.
Merriment? Anything like Horizontal’s hope?
What it means is, online reviews are worth less all the time. And since this could be the only surviving donut shop in the downward spiral that is SF, dunking on them may have little impact.
Actually, it makes perfect sense.
Only lacks one slogan.
“Cheaper than food”
—Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burgers. Hamburger place opened in 1953 for generations of U. of Michigan students’ healthy diets.
communists are full of such extreme hate. They must be pulled out of our society by the root.
‘“Let’s start addressing the root causes of conditions like obesity and put the power back in the hands of the individual patient,” he [the business owner] wrote on X.’
Because nothing says addressing the root causes of obesity like opening a gourmet donut shop. LOL.
With that said, it’s sad to see all the attempts to “cancel” a business based on the owner’s donations to Trump. I’m going to put my money and my mouth where my mouth is and buy some donuts from them tomorrow.
is receiving online backlash
My first thought was there must be more money in donuts than I thought. Then I saw the picture of bacon donuts.
Wanna bet not a single person complaining has ever purchased a donut or coffee at that store? AND now the few conservatives MAGA outcasts in SF (if there are any) now have a place to buy coffee and donuts that they can support.
I just gave it a 5 Star on Google.
“Hims & Hers“
There’s the problem.
It should be Hims, Hers, Theirs, Xirs, Catselfs, Dogselfs, Ers, Ems, Virs.
This is San Fransicko after all.
‘ Wanna bet not a single person complaining has ever purchased a donut or coffee at that store?’
Might want to check the post immediately following yours.
“a San Francisco-headquartered telehealth company co-founded by George’s Donuts co-owner”
Telehealth and donuts, there’s a combination of words I don’t see often.
I gotta check that out next time I get to SF, which is likely never again.
It isn’t real. It was a joke made by the guy who would later create “The Simpsons”.
