EU needs to end its military dependency on the US and arm itself 'to survive,' says Tusk

The European Union cannot rely on the United States to defend it and must increase military spending and security preparedness to help Ukraine and deter Russia from targeting any more of its neighbors, top EU officials warned on Wednesday.

“Ask not of America what it can do for our security. Ask yourselves what we can do for our own security,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose country holds the EU presidency, said, paraphrasing a quote from U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address in 1961.

In an address to EU lawmakers, Tusk urged the 27-nation bloc to “take control” of its own security and to identify its weaknesses. “If Europe is to survive, it must be armed,” he said.

I agree. We’ve been carrying Europe’s water for the last 80 years and with very little in the way of “Thanks!”

Whoa... The last time they armed themselves they started World War 2... And don’t forget World War 1.... Europeans need to be controlled and with American bases in England, Germany and Italy, the American’s can do that.

The whole of the UK and EU are welfare states.

Even the hint that anything might reduce gov payouts and the place explodes.

The “rich”.. anyone that PAYS taxes have been paying “their fair share” for years. So, going back to that well won’t go anywhere.

Business cutting back and shutting down due to lack of electricty to run can’t be aqueezed any more.

the only way to make this happen, realistically, is to push out as many of the “asylum seekers” siphoning the welfare and benefits to pay for it.

Turkey is the one you should worry about. All those Muslims now scattered all over Europe. Who do you think they would support when Turkey will want to avenge “The Battle Of Vienna”?

Given widespread birth control and abortion, Europe will never recover from the immense losses of their genetic best from 1914-1945 and emigration. They are and will remain militarily inconsequential. If Russia invaded the EU or if the EU invaded Russia it would be more comedy than war.

No complaints on that, from this side of the pond. However, it will be a hard sell to Europeans who have become accustomed to free healthcare, education, long vacations, & early retirement ages. When it comes to healthcare, they may need to accept that it is quite useless, and most likely will require that citizens spend more on that anyway, but the rest will be their line in the sand.

Tusk is correct. Each nation is ultimately responsible for its own survival. But arm up against whom? Russia might be getting frisky, but there’s no chance of Russian troops crossing into NATO territory.

Heck, Russia can’t even handle little Ukraine.

I would submit to Tusk and his pals that the real threat is within, not without. But dealing with that enemy is not politically correct. So fuhgedaboudit.

Poland might want to also secure their western border given recent history.

All this talk of protecting themselves while Europe is being destroyed from within by migration and economic destruction in the pursuit of avoiding “climate change”. Will they freeze or die of heat from no AC first? How many rapes per 100 women other forms of violence will be caused by their blind genuflection to the woke?
Europe’s most virulent enemies are the EU bureaucrats.

Poland may be the safe haven for the Volksdeutsche, when the Muslims take over Germany.

Thanks for being honest.

I've always said, we don't subsidize Europe. Our military is there to keep a gun pointed at them. NATO is an arm of the American Empire.

Now Israel, we've been subsidizing them for decades. Just pouring tens of billions at them. (What about Ukraine!) Yeah, for a couple of years, we've also subsidized Ukraine.

Donald Tusk is advocating for the European Union to take collective responsibility for its own security, which implies the formation of a stronger, unified EU military capability, rather than individual EU countries building or enhancing their separate national armies.

The world would be a more dangerous place if the globalists in Brussels get their own army.

True, so I do take back what I said. Poland needs to arm itself, and not be a vassal of the EU. They need to implement Piłsudski’s ‘Intermarium’, with the other Central European states.

Poland did both.
Its controlled its internal problems, maintained a large military, and is going much further in that direction. Eastern Europe hangs on the Polish Armed Forces, the shield of the West. And everybody there knows it.

Thanks in very large part to Tusks predecessors, the PiS, under (still current) President Duda. Duda is an unsung hero on many levels.
