Jan. 19 Update: PJM (Mid-Atlantic grid operator) Prepares for Cold Weather Conditions
PJM (Pennsylvania Jersey Maryland) ^ | 1/19/2025 | PJM Staff

In preparation for the upcoming bitter cold weather today (Sunday) through Thursday, Jan. 23, PJM has implemented a number of procedures to enhance the flexibility for operators to react to real-time and forecast system conditions.

With the coldest weather since 2015 moving into the PJM footprint of 13 states and the District of Columbia, electricity demand on Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to approach PJM’s all-time winter peak of 143,295 MW, set on Feb. 20, 2015.

Low Voltage Alert

PJM issued a Low Voltage Alert through 10 a.m. Thursday to prepare for heavy demand and the potential for tight system conditions. This proactive measure is meant to allow as much electricity as possible to be carried throughout the transmission system, and is a tool to make sure customers have the power they need throughout the cold spell.

Cold Weather Alert

When a Cold Weather Alert is issued, PJM communicates with generation owners to tell them to be prepared to call in additional staff to get all units running for when electricity use begins to increase.

Conservative Operations

When PJM declares Conservative Operations, system operators have more flexibility to make decisions to maintain reliability by increasing reserves and/or reducing power flows on selected facilities.

Not quite enough to be called a brown out, but getting there.

I wonder if system operator flexibility includes cutting power to Cap One Arena when Trump's taking the oath.

I hope there are no issues for today’s events.

We’ve been all looking forward to it for a very long time.

Plus I dont want to eat all the unhealthy food I bought for today while watching something else :)

Rest assured, D.C. has emergency generation (fossil-fuel powered) to support the D.C. critical load.

The D.C. neighborhood MAY have voltage issues, and possible brownouts, but the Capitol is not going to be affected.

There’s bound to be talk tomorrow (think of my lifelong sorrow)
At least there’ll be plenty implied (if you caught pneumonia and died)
I really can’t stay (get over that old doubt)
Baby, it’s cold, baby, it’s cold outside

You know it’s cold when Montgomery, Alabama has postponed MLK activities due to weather. City just about shuts down on MLK day.

“Prepares”. Does that mean PJM is telling utilities to restart all the prematurely shuttered coal plants?
