A huge fire broke out at one of the world's largest battery storage plants

A major fire broke out Thursday at one of the world's largest battery storage plants.

The facility, in Moss Landing, northern California, stores energy for general use as part of the state grid, and is a significant part of California's efforts to use cleaner energy.

It caught fire Thursday afternoon, officials in Monterey County said, prompting evacuation orders for more than 2,000 people.

A Monterey County Sheriff's Office spokesperson told the local news channel KSBW 8 that 40% of the battery plant had burned.

A law enforcement spokesperson told CNN that concerns around chemical spills and hazardous material burning had prompted broad evacuation orders.

...snip...

Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church told KSBW-TV that the fire was a "worst-case scenario" and a "very severe" situation. But he said he didn't expect the fire to spread beyond the concrete building it was enclosed in.

Even so, "there's no way to sugarcoat it," he added. "This is a disaster."

Moss Landing is a beautiful coastal environment about halfway between Monterrey and Santa Cruz.

250 miles north of the Malibu fires.

This plant claimed to be the world's largest battery storage facility in 2023. Huge.

It's going to burn for a while.

To reiterate, the legacy news headlines are false. This fire has nothing to do with Tesla and our Megapacks are operating well. https://t.co/4gxa2AKIa8โ€” Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 17, 2025

Battery storage for the grid is about the dumbest thing. And I have decentralized solar with battery storage. It makes me need less energy from the over-regulated energy market that the Dims mess up.

But solar and wind for the grid is ridiculous. The grid should be dependable power. Battery storage to make solar and wind sources behave like they're constant is a pipe dream.

“Were they storage batteries?”

There terminology sucks. It sounds like a warehouse, but it is a giant battery farm, in constant operation, with the purpose of sending power on to the grid. They always like to locate them in residential areas, when all that’s needed is for them to be located near relatively high voltage power lines.

“there’s no way to sugarcoat it,” he added. “This is a disaster”.

The disaster happened when they decided to embrace this technology and build this plant.

“But solar and wind for the grid is ridiculous.”

Agree, but needless to say they get HUGE taxpayer dollars, so they don’t care.

And, by the way, if you do happen to wonder near a coal power plant, their ‘battery’ is the huge pile of coal that sits outside, and that battery DOES NOT simply burn itself to the ground in one day, although there is some very minor burning inside the pile, from what I remember.

The California Coastal Commission needs to go under the microscope to determine what their ‘cut’ was.
