Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has removed Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) from the chairmanship of the House's intelligence committee, reportedly due to concerns President-elect Donald Trump had about Turner.
Johnson's decision to remove Turner from atop the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), first reported Wednesday by Punchbowl News, marks the first significant shakeup from Johnson in the new Congress.
The Speaker has sole authority to appoint the chairmen of select committees, and although Johnson had delayed an official announcement on the committee's leadership this Congress, his removal of Turner surprised most on Capitol Hill.

Turner butted heads with Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), his fellow Ohioan, over the path forward on FISA reauthorization, which ultimately passed in April 2024 after Turner's approach won out. The two committees split jurisdiction over FISA, and a Judiciary Committee approach to reauthorize FISA would have gone further towards instituting reforms.
Turner was also one of the most vociferous proponents of foreign aid to Ukraine to fight its increasingly quixotic war against Russia.
Turner confirmed his firing to CBS News, which reports that Johnson cited “concerns from Mar-a-Lago” as behind his decision.

Zeepers saddened.
A Deep State operative disempowered. This is a VERY good thing.
Lol!!!
Possibly due to this, voting against measure to fine Garland $10,000 per day for being in contempt of Congress :
From Politico: “ Republican Reps. David Joyce (Ohio), Mike Turner (Ohio), Tom McClintock (Calif.) and John Duarte (Calif.) voted against the resolution. A dozen Republicans didn’t vote.”
Wonder what their online handle was.
“Turner was also one of the most vociferous proponents of foreign aid to Ukraine to fight its increasingly QUIXOTIC war against Russia.”
Quixotic - Legendary description!
“adjective: quixotic
exceedingly idealistic; unrealistic and impractical.
“a vast and perhaps quixotic project”
Kind of fits what a FReeper said to me earlier today when I said that the war only ends when the US both talks to and LISTENS to Russia.
He responded: “that is some incredible hopium”
I asked him what end-game he wants, perhaps Ukraine winning?
He knew enough not to respond.
Some people you hire because they show the potential of being a good leader.
Some you hire, or continue to hire because they show the potential of being a good sock puppet.
Each personality trait has it’s uses.
A good manager is able to recognize it when displayed.
Is this guy going to get puffed up and refuse to confirm Trump’s nominees? Hope not.
He’s not a Senator
Oh noes!
You sad marcus buddy? :)
Go to ukraine and save the day.
Front lines!! :)
The House doesn’t confirm anybody.
I know many or most of us have our doubts about Mike Johnson.
But if he is now going to basically do what Trump tells him, then that’s awesome.
How many FReepers have actually, actually listened to Russia though?
They've declared that Ukraine does not have a right to exist and that Ukraine belongs to "greater Russia." They don't even uphold the old lies about Ukraine NATO membership (Ukraine was never eligible to begin with). Now it's just pure imperialism, with the Russkies declaring that the only government they'll recognize in Ukraine is one that is under their control.
As for Quixotic, I think that this word is being used because Pro-Russian people have been so brainwashed with the idea of the imminent defeat of Ukraine since day one, that cognitive dissonance has broken them, like robots. Kind of like a religious cult that predicted over and over again the second coming but failed, so they just become more fervent and stupid about it.
In no universe is 600,000 dead Russkies, no major tactical victories in over a year, maybe 2 years, loss of their flashships in the black sea, loss of their Syrian port and ally due to an inability to defend them, plus an economy that is now reaching its last legs, in no universe is "winning."
It's a literal Russian quagmire, like how the left used to describe the Iraq War.
Hush democrat.
