Biden's last chance to tackle tobacco: Limiting nicotine levels in cigarettes
NBC News ^ | Jan. 10, 2025 | Erika Edwards

In its last few days of power, the Biden administration is expected to officially propose a limit on nicotine in cigarettes. It’d be a last-minute move to push back against the tobacco industry after President Joe Biden failed to finalize a long-standing pledge to ban menthol cigarettes.

The proposal, which could come as soon as Monday, is not expected to include tobacco products like e-cigarettes or nicotine replacement patches and lozenges.

Precise details of the proposal to cap nicotine levels have not been released. Multiple studies have suggested, however, that levels may have to be slashed by up to 95% to make them minimally or non-addictive.

Nicotine is finally being recognized as a healing modality.
Not smoking, but pure nicotine.

Agreed. Several studies out in the last 5 years have shown incredible results for nicotine across exercise science, mental health, and nutrition. Smoking it is not the best delivery mechanism, and several NIH studies show that it’s not the nicotine but the additives in the cigarettes causing addiction and cancer.

American teens and young adults have already moved on vapes and oral nicotine products like Zyns. American Cigarette production peaked like more than 40 years ago and has been declining steadily ever since. Such a Biden-esque move to belatedly declare war on a declining product that barely matter any more and pretty much only enjoyed by a declining cohort of people.

Cigarette smokers tend to be among the poorest in society.

They have zero political power.

Therefore they are easy targets for bullies like Democrats.

This is class warfare—the rich stomping on the poor.

SO people will smoke 10 times as many cigs to get their nicotine fix and pollute their lungs and drain their bank account?

Stupid, lowering nicotine is only going to make people smoke more. I found myself doing that when I switched to light cigarettes.

Hard to believe but we are now 9 days away from this domestic enemy and his minions finally being removed from power, and I am holding on to my seat because we damn well know they are going to do something bad and I’m hoping it doesn’t involve Trump. The “peaceful transfer of power” Yeah right, when have they ever done that? Last time they held a 3 year fake investigation into Russia collusion destroying lives, costing mmillions

After 35 years I am focused on my smoking of cigarettes.
I like the nicotine as I do my morning coffee.
As I head out to Mass shortly I will stop by the local Walmart to try a product that I heard about on the podcast I listen to.
Lucy Breakers. It’s a “pouch” delivery system.
I’ll report back on the product next Sunday.🤞

SloJo has truly become a despotic, antiAmerican dictator in these last few months of his ignoble reign. He can’t be gone too soon.

I wonder how many people are injured tripping over their shoelaces everyday... (?)

Here's something:

"How many injuries are caused by untied shoelaces? Correctly fitting footwear should have little or no negative impact on our health. It can also eliminate accidents caused due to untied shoe laces. 3000 teens die from shoelace related accidents every year."

Let's get on this....

So all the smokers will become vapers. As Biden’s British mates would say, gotta lighten up the fags.

(FD: never smoked, cigs nor weed. Never smoked a brisket, for that matter.)

It is widely recognized that taxes on cigarettes are “taxes on poor”.
They hit by far mostly the poor!

Another executive order that can be overturned by another executive order.

These EOs need to go away. They’re like personal opinion part time laws. Congress is the only body that can pass laws or recind laws and they need to recind thousands of laws. The president’s job is to enforce them and all these federal institutions have no legal authority to make up rules and regulations to follow either.

The war on tobacco is going on while marihuana and even hard drugs are being promoted, by the same people.

Smoking marihuana is a lot more harmful than smoking tobacco!

Obviously, they do not care about health, but they want the taxes, industry and mind control.

Started using tobacco when I was 15 years old, smoked pipe-
cigars-cigarettes & chewed. Quit when I was in my early 40s
and haven't touched tobacco since. I'm 84 years old and still
moving about. Not near as strong but still do outside work such
as mow the lawn, garden some, and depending upon the weather
etc. walk or ride a bicycle some. But age has changed activities.

As an ex-smoker, I can attest to the fact that all the smokers I knew smoked only because they were addicted to nicotine. All Biden will do by reducing the nicotine level in cigarettes will be to increase the sales of cigarettes so they can get enough of their fixes.
