As I drive towards Pacific Palisades, the heart of the LA wildfires, ash falls like snow. The air is sulphurous and my throat burns. Up ahead in the distance, the sky glows an angry red. On the opposite side of the road, traffic is backed up. Everyone else is trying to get out.
An American friend with me struggles to take it all in. ‘This is f***ing unbelievable, man,’ he repeats softly to himself.
Even by LA standards these fires are unprecedented. They are the worst not only in the history of California but the history of the United States.
So far, they have killed at least 11 people, and wiped out an estimated 29,000 acres of land, 10,000 homes and other structures. They have also caused around £47 billion ($57 billion) in economic damage and forced 180,000 people to evacuate.
The mood on the ground here is the same mix of rage and grief I’ve seen in Ukraine after a Russian missile strike or a particularly bloody battle. And almost everyone around me believes this carnage was avoidable.
The main target of their anger is LA mayor Karen Bass, who was away in Ghana when the fires began. When she did eventually show up to give a press conference, she informed her now desperate citizenry that all the help they needed could be ‘found at URL’.
She had meant to give the emergency website for victims of the fire to visit, but it appears the script in front of her only said ‘URL’ – the shorthand for all web addresses. Thinking on your feet is not a Bass speciality.

The L A fires are beginning to take on the appearance of orchestrated terrorism.
Syphilization advances...
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey 'n rye
And singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die
( I know, but the lyrics are so good I had to post them twice)
No, they will vote for those people at next opportunity.
So, what is this new theory?
3 Lesbians named Kristen, you can’t make this stuff up! (see tagline)
Probably just the local homeless starting fires while strung out on drugs.
I’m honestly surprised this did not happen sooner. I guess they reached their tipping point with homeless.
FTA-——an explanation for what went wrong has been found one in a simple acronym: DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion). Critics now accuse Bass’ lesbian LAFD chief Kristin Crowley of prioritising DEI policies over actual fire fighting since Bass gave her the job in 2022. The LAFD’s 2023-2026 strategic plan lists seven goals......including
<><>commitments to ‘embrace diversity, equity and inclusion’,
<><>‘promote a safe, healthy and progressive work environment’
<><>and ‘enhance... environmental sustainability’.
It’s too early to say how large a role this focus on woke idiocy played, especially given the manifold other failings. What matters is that people believe it. Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk has waded in, tweeting simply: ‘DEI means people DIE.’
Probably just the local homeless starting fires while strung out on drugs.
There was a statement in an earlier FR comment that there were several major transmission line faults. One of them appears to be a tower falling over. That could easily start a fire.
Not saying you're wrong. Just saying there may be multiple sources for the fires.
The newest report I’d there are 16 people dead.
“So, what is this new theory?”
My theory is the DM wants clicks and page views.
The word “theory” is used three times on the page, once in the title, once in a teaser about Mel Gibson, and a third time in a box that asks the question in the title.
Warning label on every plan and product of the left:
"We Don’t Bear Responsibility"
- DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Feb. 11, 2024
Many past fires have been started by homeless out in the woods trying to keep warm.
Then again the place is so try and they don’t clear the brush so any spark could start this.
Both are true.
Those aren’t new. 🙂
LA officials might want to rethink visiting Ghana:
Village chief whipped by his people for stealing money meant for the construction of wells

An unprincipled village chief has been severely reprimanded by his people for stealing the money meant for the construction of wells in his village.
According to sources, an NGO donated a huge sum of money to the village for the construction of wells.
But this dishonourable chief saw it as an avenue to steal the money and spend it on his own personal pieces of stuff.

My guess? From the article:
Because President Trump said that Newsom refused to sign a "water restoration declaration," Newsom is using this to say there is no such thing, and therefore everything they say about him is disinformation.
On his first day in office in January 2019, Mr Newsom pledged ‘to do more and better’ on wildfires.
But an investigation by news outlet NPR found that despite his claims that 90,000 acres would be managed responsibly, in reality it was less than 12,000 acres.
It also found that Mr Newsom deducted £123 million ($150 million) from California’s wildfire prevention budget.
Still, if the NPR story is backed up that Newsom failed to properly manage 87% of the wildfire-prone forests and diverted $150 million from the state's wildfire prevention budget, that will be a problem for him, especially when he told Californians that it was a "local leadership" issue.
