Drone flying illegally collides with, grounds Super Scooper over Palisades fire

A firefighting plane that drops more than 1,500 gallons of water at a time is grounded after it collided with a drone flying illegally above the Palisades fire Thursday, Jan. 9, according to officials.

A drone was flying above the nearly 20,000-acre fire around 10 a.m. Thursday, when the Canadair CL-14 Super Scooper struck the drone, said Christopher Thomas, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The impact left a large hole in the plane’s left wing, but the pilot landed safely.

Because of the damage, the Super Scooper, which can drop 1,600 gallons of water at a time and refill its supply in five minutes, won’t be usable until it’s repaired. It will likely be out of commission for the duration of the Palisades fire, Thomas said.

In the temporary flight restriction zones established around wildfires, all aircraft not working toward firefighting efforts are banned.

Flying a drone near a wildfire often requires fire officials to ground all aircrafts to avoid possible collisions. A drone, Thomas said, could easily take down an aircraft, killing its pilots.

To ensure no other drones were in the air, crews had to ground all firefighting aircrafts for between 15 and 30 minutes, when they could’ve been battling the growing Palisades fire, Thomas said.

I'm guessing the drone operator wanted content for his social media.

I’d guessed that there was a good chance this would happen.

they’ll need to fly in a repair crew from Canada, I suppose.

I hope they catch the guy and fine him the $75K penalty plus jail time. What idiot flys a drone when a disaster is in progress when the news choppers’ videos are so much better than any drone footage one could capture

Big enough to hole an aircraft is supposed to be big enough to require a transponder.
Oh wait, that would be some sort of enforcing the law, never-mind!

1600 gallons is a cube of roughly 6x6x6. Better than nothing, but not exactly the inundation that got Noah all worked up.

In WWII that plane would have been patched up and flying already. Just sayin’.

In WWII, planes coming back with holes was likely a daily occurrence. They had teams trained and prepared for patchwork.

Today, a hole in a plane happens far less often. So the infrastructure is not there to immediately patch it.

If they find the operator of the drone, he /she/it should be flown over the fire and dropped on it.

Excuse me. The infrastructure is there - especially in the Los Angeles area.

But also there, now, is the DEI “infrastructure” designed to utterly wreck the determination of the kind that people had during, and the two decades after, World War II.

The amazing World War II excellent determination to get the aircraft airworthy and capable of surviving the next fight - all the work done within the next 48 - 72 hours.

The kind of work that did not pin “participation medals” on peoples’ chests, for their always reminding everybody that “they” and “them” (the couple, according to Chief Justice Roberts) succeeded in having one of 57 “genders” worth of diversity while in the combat theatre.

Actually real high-speed aluminum foil tape might work. As opposed to duck tape.

First the lesbians have to determine who is the next lesbian to get a participation trophy and a $400,000+ to $500,000+ salary.

GREAT POINT - The question likely is whether they can find a Lesbian qualified to repair airframes. Certainly none in the LA Fire Department as their Lesbians are all in the top-paying jobs.
