The closures are among 66 Macy’s locations set to shutter nationwide, a move designed to return the company to "sustainable, profitable sales growth."
The stores closing in these states include:
Independence Mall
The company first announced the Bold New Chapter strategy in February 2024, outlining plans to close approximately 150 "underproductive" stores over three years while investing in its 350 "go-forward" locations. Macy’s expects the closures to be completed during the first quarter of 2025.
Daily Voice has reached out to Macy's regarding which store locations are possibly among the remaining 84 locations to close and was told they are only announcing the 66 in the attached PDF at this time.
“Closing any store is never easy,” said Macy’s Chairman and CEO Tony Spring. “But as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are focusing our resources and prioritizing investments in go-forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”
The retailer has reported success with pilot investments in its strongest stores, achieving three consecutive quarters of increased sales and record customer satisfaction scores.
As Macy’s continues to adapt to modern shopping trends, it is investing heavily in both its physical locations and digital channels, ensuring a seamless shopping experience for customers. For more information and a complete list of closures, click here.

What happens to the Wanamaker Organ?
Only one in Virginia closing is basically in Petersburg. None closing in NoVa of course. Not surprised but surprised they put a store there in the first place. Probably closing due to shrinkage, to put it politely.
It is famous for The Wanamaker Grand Court Organ, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the largest fully functioning pipe organ in the world. It is housed within a spacious 7-story Grand Court at Macy’s Center City (formerly Wanamaker’s department store) and is played twice a day Monday through Saturday. The organ weighs 287 tons and has 28,750 pipes, making it a marvel of musical engineering. It is a concert organ of the American Symphonic school of design, combining traditional organ tone with the sonic colors of the symphony orchestra.
The one closing in Memphis, well you can guess why. Houston’s down the street closed for the same reason.
It’s time to bail.
Macey’s was doing good until they dropped the Trump line.
Lol, I got off 95 and drove thru there once looking for gas. It already looks closed, and very unsafe. Sheesh…
That’s a LOT of fat.
The Bulding will stay.
My father taught TV repair to WWII GIs in the late 40s, then when the GIs ran out, he became the TV repairman at Wanamaker’s during the early 50s, before making his career in Naval electronics. Sic transit gloria.
I guess the bold, new part, is trying to avoid all domains where the government might find a dumb excuse to take money from your business.
Gee, I guess Kali isn’t that bad for business…yet.
Actually, Petersburg is one of those towns you don't want to be in ever. It's always "Dark" as midnight.
Wonderful Christmas memories at Wanamaker’s.
The BEST CHIRSTMAS SHOW IN THE COUNTRY.
Meet ya at the Eagle!
Bidenomics is working/s
Recalling 1980’s and ‘90’s and Macy’s. Was considered rather highbrow, and actually carried quality products. The level of service was a standard by which an industry was measured. I used to shop there, waiting for the seasonal sales. Like so much else that used to make the world a little better, now gone. Perhaps it was that simple, after all: high quality merchandise and excellent service. With far less of both now offered there, they have nothing over Target and Walmart.
