Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, officially requested his passport from Minister Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday so he may attend President-elect Trump’s inauguration later this month.

“Very honored to receive from the President of the USA, @realDonaldTrump , an invitation to his inauguration and that of his Vice President @JDVance , on January 20th,” Bolsonaro wrote in a post on the social platform X.

“I thank my son, Federal Deputy @BolsonaroSP , for the excellent work in this relationship with the family of President Donald J. Trump,” he added.

“My lawyer, Dr. Paulo Bueno, has already forwarded a request to Minister Alexandre de Moraes for me to get my passport back so that I can attend this honorable and important historical event.”

Something seems grammatically wrong with the use of “passport’s” in the title. Are sixth graders both writers and editors or am I wrong about this? Does the return belong to the passport?

Using a possessive apostrophe to denote a plural, has, alas, become common usage these days.

Seems OK to me. Possessive: HIS passport.

Almost, it is possessive not plural, but the apostrophe-s is on passport so the passport isn’t what possessed, it is doing the possessing.. The return “belongs to” to his passport. The “return” in question is “that of the passport” ; in other words it is the passport’s return.

Perfectly correct. His passport’s return means the return of his passport.

It’s not plural. It’s possessive. And used correctly.

The passport’s return =

The return of the passport
