Art Spiegelman, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus, has announced that he will be collaborating with Joe Sacco, creator of the documentary-comic Palestine, in a new project about Gaza.
Spiegelman made the remarks during the premiere of a documentary about his life, Art Spiegelman: Disaster is My Muse, in New York.
He said that the new graphic novel will likely be difficult to find a publisher for in the US, given the ongoing wave of censorship on Palestine in western art, but added: “I'll finish this thing or die trying”.
Spiegelman is an American cartoonist, co-editor of the comic magazines Arcade and Raw, and contributing artist for the New Yorker.
He was born to Polish Jews who lived through the German occupation of Poland and were sent to Auschwitz...
Sacco, who Spiegelman will be collaborating with, is a Maltese-American cartoonist and journalist.
He wrote his seminal graphic novel Palestine after visiting Israel and the occupied territories during the First Intifada in the late 1980s.
Although it was released over 30 years ago, according to Gary Groth, the co-founder of the book’s American publisher, Fantagraphics, demand for the book has soared since the escalation of Israel’s bombardment on the Palestinian enclave after 7 October.
A journalist by training, Sacco began interviewing Palestinians to understand the “structure of occupation and its effect”, compiling the testimony into a work of “graphic journalism.”
In an interview with Haaretz on his new graphic novel, War on Gaza, published in December, Sacco explained that, since he was not able to conduct the same on-the-ground research for this project, he had to “reach back to my satirical roots”.
“Gaza has been turned into a hell, yes, so if my comics reflect that in some small, abstract way - good,” he added...

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Art Spiegelman’s parents would be ashamed of their son for this.
The so-called “Palestinians” have the same desire to eliminate Jewish people as Hitler did. What Israel has done is no worse than the Allies in WWII, and may be more humane.
he said he’ll die trying.
It’s fascinating that Spiegel is so wrapped in his leftist ideology that he’s warped his viewpoints so much as to not realize that Israel is trying to stop what happened to his parents from ever happening again. He could just as well be writing a tome for Hitler decrying the carpet bombing from the allies and call himself heroic.
Quite.
“...began interviewing Palestinians to understand the “structure of occupation and its effect...”
And will he interview the victims of terrorism, too? Just to be fair?
When a Communist is preparing to tell an especially ambitious lie, he uses the word "structure" a lot--to sound as if he finished college, instead of dropping out to live off-campus and enjoy the cheap prices on drugs and possible access to air-headed coeds.
He apparently learned nothing from what his parents went through.
Maybe he learned the lesson of being a kapo...
Let’s not give him any ideas now.
Everything he says will be taken as the absolute truth that will be quoted as gospel. The left acquires its “facts” from the most casual of sources without the slightest concern for veracity. It is, nonetheless, free speech.
I vote for the latter.
In Maus the Jews were portrayed as mice while the Germans were cats. In this new cartoon, will the Gazans be feral, rabid, inbred kittens? The same desire to kill mice as adult cats, but only able to do it by surprise. Then they just spend most of their time hissing at everything, defecating on their own bedding and killing each other when they have nothing else to kill.
His parents were freed through “total war” tactics that were FAR harsher than Israel is using in Gaza. The allies made ZERO provision to feed the civil population of Germany. Millions of Germans were expelled from territories in Eastern Europe.
Appears to be a self-loathing type fellow.
If true, who has turned it into a hell? Hint: it's not the Israelis.
I’ve read Maus and Maus II, and would concur with your assessment.
He also made out the Poles to be as bad as the Germans.
Pigs, if I recall.
