Are Russian Sanctions Working? Debate Takes New Urgency With Trump.

Thousands of far-reaching sanctions have been imposed by dozens of countries on Russian banks, businesses and people since Moscow ordered tanks to roll across the border into Ukraine in the winter of 2022.

Now, more than 1,000 days later, as President-elect Donald J. Trump prepares to take office, questions about the sanctions’ effectiveness — and future — are expected to come under renewed scrutiny.

Mr. Trump has stated, “I want to use sanctions as little as possible.” And he has made clear that there will be a shift in American policy toward Ukraine, having promised to end the war in a single day.

Experts believe that sanctions and continued military aid are almost certain to be bargaining chips in any negotiations.

A European region has no heating after Russian gas stops flowing via Ukraine. An energy supplier told families to gather in one room to stay warm.

The BRICS nations have circumvented the sanctions as they are sick of the US using the privileged status of the US dollar to force the world to support our corrupt foreign policy and warmongering.

BRICS is an amalgamation of losers that are choosing to lose together rather than separately

BRICS is a group of sane countries tired of Harvard mis-educated rich white elites running the world behind puppet leaders they chose and put in office because they are too ashamed to do their dirty work in public. So, the sanctions are more coercion of the “rest of world” by the US government, which now aims to run everything. So, sane nations have left “the dollar, and the WEF, and the notion of US hegemony. They are smart. Competition is good, as Americans used to say.

It is fascinating that a London-based reporter mentions the dean of the London Business School, a Russian who “fled” Russia in 2013. Quite a nice job placement, as one considers the controversy about migrant visas here in the US. No British economists worthy to be dean of the London Business School? What is certain is that the “debate” will be settled as the Urkaine-Russia war comes to some sort of conclusion, and the recent BBC and NYT sorts of “look into the crystal ball” will be old “news” while the actual news of the war remains opaque.

Ughhh!

This is a debate where both facts and hard definitions about goals seem to be missing. Before you can answer the question in the title you first have to define what the goals of the Russian Sanctions are.

No, immediately causing the collapse was never realistic nor was it actually the goal. The purpose of the sanctions was to increase the cost of the war by increasing the friction and cost of importing specific types of inputs into Russia. Yes, the sanctions have significantly increased the economic pain of prosecuting the war for Russia, by both increasing the costs, and limiting the production of certain types of weapons.

BRICS is an amalgamation of very different countries that have very little in common besides a desire not to be toadies to the US/EU neo-liberal establishments.

Sure they’re working — they’ve driven Russia into alliances with scoundrels.
