Russian energy has continued to transit unimpeded through Ukrainian territory every day until now, with the taps being firmly closed on New Year’s Day.

Zero Russian gas is flowing to European customers through Ukrainian pipelines for the first time in decades today, confirmation there was to be no last-minute deal to keep the route open, sending energy prices spiking on Tuesday. The route has seen billions of cubic feet of gas delivered since the end of the Cold War, and a five-year contract between Moscow and Kyiv governing the transit of gas continued to be observed, remarkably, right to the last moment when it expired at midnight.

So obviously the best solution for the EU Commission is to “sanction” some more. Thankfully the EU's promotion of solar panels covered with snow, windmills which need hydrocarbon fuel to turn when iced up, and more Green politics is the answer.

Actually, Kreeper, you have things completely "bass-ackwards".

Russia was selling gas to Europeans, and the earnings were/are funding Russia's invasion. Zelensky is just ending the folly of helping Russia to kill Ukrainians and destroy Ukraine. Europe was directly helping to fund the Russian war against Ukraine. The Europeans were having things bothe ways; helping the Ukrainians and helping Russia. Stupidity all around. That stupidity is what's kept the war going on for so long. Perhaps now, the war can come to a quicker end, especially when Trump will tighten the screws a lot more against Russia's oil and gas exports.

The Ukrainian produces their own natural gas as well but the will lose some supply from Russia. Now that the pipeline has been shut down to Europe expect the Russians to destroy it. I really do think that Russia is stockpiling drones, missiles and FAB guided glide bombs for a massive attack that will totally overwhelm the Ukrainian air defenses before Trump takes office. During World War II the Russian industrial war machine produce such massive amounts of weapons that the invasion of Germany was a slaughterfest of Katusha rocket, artillery and bombs in spite of furious German resistance.
