SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A blackout hit nearly all of Puerto Rico early on Tuesday as the U.S. territory prepared to celebrate New Year’s, leaving more than 1.3 million clients in the dark. Officials said it could take up to two days to restore power.

The outage hit at dawn, plunging the island into an eerie silence as electrical appliances and air conditioners shut down before those who could afford generators turned them on.

“It had to be on the 31st of December!” exclaimed one man, who only gave his name as Manuel, as he stood outside a grocery store in the capital of San Juan, grumbling about the outage that coincided with his birthday. “There is no happiness.”

Nearly 90% of 1.47 million clients across Puerto Rico were left in the dark, according to Luma Energy, a private company that oversees electricity transmission and distribution.

That's okay. They can all come to Florida just like they did in 2017 when they couldn't figure out how to clean up after the hurricane hit. They were all at Home Depot buying battery-powered tools to send back to their chicas in PR for months afterward.

And nobody in Florida told the natives what was about to hit their neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, doctors' offices, grocery stores, and roads, until it was too late.

At least he got a beautiful umbrella for his birthday.

Trump sent relief supplies and their corrupt governor left it to rot while smearing Trump.

Has anything been done by Biden’s handlers to help them?

True that. The Governor knew what was going to happen, and it did. So many fewer hungry mouths left to feed on the Island.

The Russians needed 1000 missiles and 2.5 years to put Ukraine in the darkness.

Puerto Ricans were able to do it all by themselves in one day!!

Now THAT’S an achievement!

As you pointed out the power grid on the island has been a long standing problem. It is a problem due to the lack of investment in modern infrastructure and people not paying for electricity. The electric utility has been in and out of court bankruptcy proceedings since 2017.

You have a debt heavy public corporation that has an inadequate revenue source. It can barely buy fuel, let along modernize worn out equipment.

This is what a corporate or public “death spiral” looks like.

This is what you get when a significant portion of the population steals electricity from the grid as though it were a birthright.

Puerto Rico has received $13 billion to rebuild it's electrical system since hurricane maria..

Hurricane Maria decimated the island's electrical system when it struck in late September 2017, mainly by knocking out transmission lines

It took several years under the Trump Administration for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to approve $9.6 billion in September 2020 to rebuild Puerto Rico's electrical grid. About another $3.4 billion in federal funding has been added since.

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/what-has-happened-puerto-ricos-power-grid-since-hurricane-maria-2022-09-19/

It didn't take several years to approve the funds...it took time to dole it out, and not give it as a lump sum for puerto rico to decide how it was used/pocketed.

as it ends up, a lot of the funds have likely disappeared due to graft anyway.

When I hear this it reminds me of certain people who are pushing for Puerto Rico to become a full fledged state of the United States. Why? So thwt wwe acn put more people on welfare and food stamps? They can’t even keep the lights on there. And there is a travel advisory for US citizens since the crime rate is so high.
