President-elect Trump made quite the buzz over the weekend when he expressed a strong interest in acquiring the Danish-controlled autonomous territory of Greenland, a land that is both immensely resource-rich and strategically a high priority to the interests of all major powers.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump announced the nomination of PayPal co-founder Ken Howery to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, writing: “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Greenland is incredibly resource-rich, with rare earth mineral deposits valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars, and its geopolitical position is incredibly significant to American interests vis-a-vis our Great Power rivals. Should Greenland fall under the Chinese umbrella, it will have devastating national security implications for the United States.

Don’t be surprised if the Trump Administration reaches out to Copenhagen and starts the very real process of negotiations over the future of Greenland. They can start by leveraging Denmark’s failure to live up to the two-percent defense spending threshold as a NATO member. The United States already maintains one military base in Greenland, known as Pituffik Space Base, which supports critical missile warning, missile defense and space surveillance missions.

It’s up to the people of Greenland..not us
No. Come to an agreement. We can’t go the route of the colonials. The 56k people there are ripe for improvement and the US is pretty decent compared to other colonial powers throughout history. American indians will disagree but think of how Thomas Jefferson and James Polk kept them from Spanish rule.
Can we take advantage of the minerals without teaching them how to hate us? The population should remain indigenous. I see no need to travel there.
I think that should be entirely up to the people of Greenland.
You are right.
Greenland isn’t a country.
The article uses the word "acquire". Trump uses similar language. I have no expectation that Trump is going to invade.
I think it's clear that it's up to BOTH sides.
Reminds me of the trailer park in Malibu. It was there for the longest time. A developer offered and the trailer folks all became millionaires. Some deals you can’t pass up.
Louisiana Purchase. France needed money to put down the rebellion in Haiti. We were broke at the time. Strike while the iron is hot.
Alaska/Gadsen-I’m unaware of the circumstances but both turned out ok. Pass Go and collect the $200 I say.
The nation has moved from Republic to Empire phase.
Just look at our politics in DC.
Will be an even better asset after global warming gets rid of all the ice and snow.
“Known for its natural beauty, the US state of Wyoming may soon be known for something buried beneath its stunning topography: An estimated 2.34 billion metric tons of rare earth minerals (REMs), which make the world’s computing-dependent technologies possible, were recently discovered near Wheatland, a town in southeastern Wyoming.
“According to American Rare Earths, the company’s wholly-owned deposits have a potential volume far greater than China’s estimated 44 million metric tons of the minerals, which could establish the US as the world’s largest supplier. At present, China supplies about 95% of the global supply of REMs, 74% of which are imported by the US.”
In the Republic's current reduced state, what are we going to offer these people that they don't already have? (Amazon deliveries? Fast food? Fentanyl?)
Isn’t Greenland under the authority of Denmark?

A few observations:
1. Trump has put his supporters into the position of having to justify his remarks after they are posted. This needs to be a team effort.
2. Treaties don’t get negotiated by creating a “buzz” that’s going to give advance notice and ammo to everyone opposed to them.
Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark...
They’re a territory.
That’s right.
I agree.
“ On 21 June 2009, Greenland gained self-rule with provisions for assuming responsibility for self-government of judicial affairs, policing, and natural resources. Also, Greenlanders were recognized as a separate people under international law.
“Denmark maintains control of foreign affairs and defence matters. Denmark upholds the annual block grant of 3.2 billion Danish kroner, but as Greenland begins to collect revenues of its natural resources, the grant will gradually be diminished. This is generally considered to be a step toward eventual full independence from Denmark.
“Greenlandic was declared the sole official language of Greenland at the historic ceremony.”
So let's see. In the early to mid 2000s Conservatives including many Freepers supported sending our manufacturing, technology, money, and tax base to China for the promise of "benefits to the consumer". Now we're talking about annexing land to counter the threat we funded with our consumer dollars.
It's nice that we won in 2024, but that won't last long if we don't start looking at the big picture rather than just the short term benefit of saving a few pennies.
