The Minnesota legislature just flipped to Republican control after a DFL party member, which is the state's Democratic Party, was found ineligible. A Ramsey County District Court judge ruled that Curtis Johnson held his primary residence in another legislative district and not in House District 40B.
That gives Republicans a one-seat majority for the time being, taking power from Democrats for the first time since the 2017-2018 legislature.
A Ramsey County District Court judge ruled Friday that DFL candidate Curtis Johnson did not meet residency requirements to run for Minnesota House District 40B, declaring him ineligible to take the oath of office. Johnson defeated Republican challenger Paul Wikstrom by 31 percentage points on Election Night; however, Wikstrom filed suit claiming Johnson never lived in the district and made his primary residence in another legislative district in Little Canada. DFL leaders decried the decision, claiming the case should be dismissed because matters of residency should be worked out prior to an election.

There's a very real chance the courts could order a new election, meaning Republicans would hold a two-seat majority for some time with the chance to win an outright majority once the special elections are done. That ruling is expected soon so we'll have to see how this all plays out.

The tampon getting red?
“for the first time since the 2017-2018”. As if that has been a long time. I shake my head almost every time this phrase is used because it usually only a short time span. Often used to comment on weather.
Hillary Clinton bought a residence in New York to run for office. She had not lived in New York. The cost of the residence was offset by forcing the Secret Service to rent the part the Secret Service needed to occupy.
I think what has happened is the huge political infrastructure that protected the Democrats has simply aged out and not been replaced or maintained. The reason for this is the same reason that fossils like Nancy Pelosi refuse to turn over their power and position to younger players. Thus, when they die, the structure they are a part of collapses.
Not long ago, rules, regulations and laws were often not enforced at any level against Democrats. But the rot, decay and death has been taking place at all levels. Not every power broker has the media presence of Pelosi or the Clintons. But they are...or, rather, were busy brokering, nonetheless.
A Minnesota rep is probably like a new york rep, not much different than a democrat
Minneapolis and St Paul are still there ans still control. Minnesota is a lost cause and will never be worth a damn.
Better red than techd in the head;D
I live in MN and used to live in TX. I always said (and still do) that a MN Republican would be a Democrat in the south. A lefty but not a kook lefty.
House District 40B (D+16 PVI) is in the heart of the Twin Cities, and consists of Guilty White Liberal types, semi-upscale, heavily White collar, over-eduacated and they feel so very virtuous after voting for a ghetto type to represent them in the state House.
A Democrat (ANY Democrat) will probably win the special election by at least 25 points.
Minneapolis and St Paul are still there ans still control. Minnesota is a lost cause and will never be worth a damn.
We have a lot of small wins. We wouldn’t have seen this in the courts or the news a few years ago.
Things are changing right before our eyes. We won’t win them all or right away. The trend is good.
Yes I understand your point. It is well made. The trend is extremely favorable.
However, my point still stands. There can be no win in Minnesota.
