Two U.S. Navy pilots ejected safely over the Red Sea after their F/A-18 fighter aircraft was mistakenly shot down early Sunday in what military officials are calling "an apparent case of friendly fire."
One of the pilots has minor injuries, according to a news release from U.S. Central Command.
The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, which is part of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, mistakenly fired on and hit the aircraft, that was flying off the USS Harry S. Truman, according to the news release.
The military said a full investigation is underway.

CIWS likely got hungry. Maybe the automated software will get better, but there’s a reason the Israeli ship bushwhacked by a Hezbollah missile 20 odd years ago kept its CIWS off. Apart from CIWS once having a taste for flocks of seagulls, the fear was of hitting civilian anything, either directly or from downrange impacts.

Captain Justin R. Hodges is the commanding officer (CO) of the USS Gettysburg (CG-64). He took command in February 2023.
This is as unforgivable as it is incomprehensible. The CO, XO, OPs O, Weapons Officer, OOD, and possibly the MCPOC, should all be canned, Courts Martialed, busted, and flushed with BCDs. Unbelievable!

Probably kinda lucky that these weren’t Russian planes.
Just a heads up here. If the Houthis or Iranians as proxy managed this shoot down with some brand new technology, then this is exactly how it would be reported.
There are over a dozen things to go wrong at the same time for a support Cruiser to fire upon a fleet Hornet. Beyond IFF and digital link and CIC protocols a boat load of people screwed up and somebody needs to lose Command of their ship!
