Senate passes bill to stop shutdown, sending it to President Biden

Senators voted to pass a new version of a stopgap spending bill early Saturday morning after the midnight deadline for a partial government shutdown came and went.

The Senate advanced the third version of a short-term spending bill by 85 to 11, and it will now head to President Biden's desk, who has already signaled that he will sign it.

An original agreement on a short-term spending bill was released earlier in the week, totaling 1,547-pages and including a number of policy provisions and disaster aid.

"Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH. If Democrats threaten to shut down the government unless we give them everything they want, then CALL THEIR BLUFF. It is Schumer and Biden who are holding up aid to our farmers and disaster relief," Trump and Vance said in a lengthy statement opposing the bill on Wednesday afternoon.

Guess what else has been passed, because job security, insanely generous pensions and awesome health bennies aren't enough for our so-called public servants...

Senate passes Social Security bill to repeal WEP and GPO The repeal, a decades-long priority for public employee advocates, heads to the president for his signature after a late night Senate vote.

BOHICA, taxpayers. We're just case cows to Deep State and their minions willing for the shilling.

See my #2 and #4.

The pay raises might just have been cover for what Deep State really wanted.

I’m going reserve any criticism until I read more about what is in this bill. For myself, I did not think shutting down the government prior to the holidays and President Trump‘s inauguration was a good idea.

The main problem with keeping the government open is that it allows the current Democrat crazies in the administration to:

—Make new hires
—Pass new regulations
—Spent lots of money

The old rules of “civility” just don’t work any more when the Democrats have declared war on average citizens.

This bill is a “win” compared to the first Christmas Tree 1500 page monster, but we should have no illusions that nothing good is going to be happening until the new administration gets to town.

“I’m going reserve any criticism until I read more about what is in this bill. For myself, I did not think shutting down the government prior to the holidays and President Trump‘s inauguration was a good idea.”

I had struggled with which action would the more correct: whether to shut down or not. I knew Newt did & I admire his knowledge. But, that was then not now.

I agree shutting down the government prior to the holidays and President Trump‘s inauguration was a good idea.”

Interesting tidbit:

TYPO CORRECTION:

Sounds like we should keep them closed forever, but seems to me the smart thing for Republicans to do was pass legislation that they preferred and let the Senate fight over it and for the Democrats to decide to shut the government down, but that didn’t happen.

Let me be absolutely clear—I wanted the government shut down until January when the new administration took over.

That was not a crazy ask.

Unfortunately for all of us my Christmas wish was not granted.

Psssst.

There’s no such thing as a shutdown.

What Deep State deems essential keeps on running.

Only parts shuttered ate those Deep State can use to bring the pain to the citizenry.

I was so totally cool with a...snort...shutdown.

It took me a minute to come up with some language that wasn’t profane.

I would like to hear Sen. Vance explain his thinking on that.

To put it politely.

Please...the House passed it 327-75 and the Senate passed it 76-20. Hardly a sneaky, squeaker. It was introduced in March of 2023.

The original law was only 20 years old.

KICK THE BIDEN’S OF SS THEY GET $50 K A YEAR, PLUS HIS PRESIDENTIAL RETIREMENT. Joe Biden in Line for a $413,000 Dual Pension Payout upon Departing the Presidency.

Upon leaving the White House, presidents have generally been financially well-off and are afforded numerous opportunities for lucrative book deals, speeches, or other money-making endeavors. Regardless of the net worth of former presidents, they are entitled to an annual pension equivalent to the salary of a cabinet secretary, currently $246,400 in 2024 and often adjusted annually.

There is also a completely separate pension program available for members of Congress. President Joe Biden previously served in the Senate for 36 years and another eight years as Vice President, a role which serves as presiding officer in the Senate, making him eligible for a starting pension worth $166,374.

Biden is eligible to collect both pensions, for a combined payout that could start at $412,774, before any 2025 adjustment of the presidential pension (which won’t be known until late December).
