The omnibus spending bill had $8 billion dollars for the Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement. .

That is way too much money to rebuild the Key Bridge. Easily four times as much as it should cost.

...

This reminds the Oahu rail project. Around $12B, tons of fraud... total failure of a project. Does not meet intent. Also heavy foreign outsourcing for building talent.

How much did it cost to build the bridge initially,

adjusted for inflation? -

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed in March 2024, initially cost about $61 million to build in 1977. Adjusted for inflation to 2024 dollars, this equates to approximately $343 million

Why do you use both the dollar sign and the word ‘dollars?’

Do you take even a second to proof read before you post? Is your attention span really that short?

Wow. Adjusted for inflation that bridge would cost 343 million.

For sake of argument say the materials and labor costs more adjusted for inflation nowadays. In the case we could say 600 million should cover it.

But they were planning 8 billion? Very far out of line with inflation?

Do they still do competitive bidding with major construction projects? I just have to wonder where did that eight billion number come from? Is it based on an analysis of the actual costs? Did someone just make up that number?

Ya know, if ya got rid of 2/3s of the bureaucrats on D.C., ya might not need a new bridge.

Did someone just make up that number?

It was a well calculated number determined by the number of hands expected to hit the till.

Let’s not forget that there are insurance companies liable for the bridge!

Why isn’t the ships insurance paying it.

Since a privately owned ship wrecked it shouldn’t that company and their insurers pay for it??? Why should the taxpayers pay even 1 cent?

When you start talking in billions, most people's eyes just glaze over. They cannot comprehend that kind of money and the lawmakers take advantage of that. You could say the bridge would cost $12 billion and most taxpayers would never even question it.

The waste in government on an utterly massive scale.

Will be interesting where this DOGE concept of the incoming Trump Administration goes. I'm thinking we could easily save trillions of dollars without affecting vital services.

This is the real reason why establishment Washington (i.e. the Deep State) hates Trump so much and want to destroy him at all costs.

I wonder how much of the replacement cost, two billion vs. 343 million in constant dollars, is due to “environment” impact and other unnecessary red tape.

Since its construction, standards for bridge piers ability to resist allision with today’s larger freighters are in effect, so that might drive some of the cost increase.

One has to wonder if a two billion dollar bridge even makes economic sense. Why not just route traffic around the harbor.

So what? All the young bucks should be hustling finding jobs with the companies that are going to rebuild it. The higher ups will probably be on all-inclusive around-the-world cruises while the project is going on. If you can’t beat them, join them. Seems like no one has an interest in doing what is right and there are apparently no consequences.

Exactly, this is why they need to steal $ 8B now !

************

But in the end it that’s what the final cost will probably be. Every government project costs a lot more than projected. By far.

The bridge in question is on the Baltimordor Beltway - Not the Dee Cee Beltway. Your solution wouldn’t affect this.

That would be far more expensive. You would have to re-route a good chunk of 695 to do that. Not *just* rebuild the bridge.
