GOP Senator Blocks 'Desperate Attempt' by Dems to 'Trump-Proof' Washington
Townhall ^ | December 18, 2024 | Leah Barkoukis

Posted on 12/19/2024 4:28:45 AM PST by george76

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) said he was "proud" to block a proposal from Democrats to protect federal workers from potentially getting reclassified as political appointees under the incoming administration.

The measure was introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) as a way to prevent such reclassification without congressional approval. He asked for unanimous consent to pass the Saving the Civil Service Act, warning about “attempts in recent years to erode the independence of the federal civil service,” a reference to efforts President-elect Trump made in his first term.

Kaine and other Democrats fear that Trump, now reelected, may attempt to reclassify tens of thousands of federal workers as political appointees who could be hired and fired at will.

Kaine argued that federal workers need to keep their civil service protections to insulate them from political retaliation. He argued that such protections would better equip them to implement federal laws and policies dispassionately.

His bill would prohibit any position in the federal civil service from being reclassified as a job outside of the merit-based system without the consent of Congress. (The Hill)

Schmitt blocked the request, however.

“What we’ve seen in the last 100 years is the growth of an administrative state that isn’t accountable to anybody,” he said.

“There is no secret that President Trump ran on greater government efficiency and reducing the size of government. This is another effort to Trump-proof before Jan. 20,” the Republican argued.

Schmitt said there are two ways Democrats have been trying to “Trump-proof” government. First, through the auctioning off of border wall material at a fraction of its value. And secondly, he pointed to this proposal to safeguard federal workers from potential reclassification.

“And I’m just leaving the Capitol, objecting to and blocking an initiative that they put forth to pass another law that would prevent President Trump from shaping the executive branch how he wants to, possibly firing federal workers who don’t show up to work,” he said. “Only about 16 percent of federal workers are in any one of these buildings in Washington on any given day. So, reform is coming, January 2025.”

Is there is any doubt as to why these pr##s need to be prosecuted?

Actually the size of the Federal government has shrunk since the 1970’s when per capita the ratio of Federal employees to the population was largest. Currently the ratio of Federal employees to the population is around 1 Federal employee to every 600 people which is a bit higher than in 1870 when it was 1 Federal employee to every 659 people.

In 1910 it was 1 Federal employee to every 156 people and in the 1970’s even higher which is pretty astounding. It may not seem like it but the Federal government actually has been shrinking for the last 50+ years. It is the regulations and additional laws at the Federal and state level that make it much more intrusive.

They’re just getting more bang for our bucks. The spending hasn’t shrunk. They could have 10x as many employees for all I care. Just pay them a buck an hour.

Budget must be passed by tomorrow. We blocked it yesterday. POS Johnson SOLD US OUT. KEEP THE PRESSURE ON. THEY CAN’T SHUT FULL GOV DOWN. “’Shutting down’ the government (which doesn’t actually shut down critical functions btw) is infinitely better than passing a horrible bill,” he suggested.

Obama reclassified historically "political" positions as Civil Service, to permanently embed his cronies in the government.

That's called "efficiency". The government is getting more efficient. The problem isn't "efficiency"; the problem is "doing bad things".

Yes, you did, because that is precisely what it is. There is a HUGE comeuppance shortly down the road for these people.

Anyone paying close attention could see almost immediately that Johnson is a RINO who cannot be trusted to do the right thing. The sooner he’s gone the better for our country.

The government employee headcount doesn't include the army of consultant firms doing the Deep State's bidding.

I just hope Johnson says no to upping the debt limit. There is no reason to add to the already insane debt. Johnson must stay strong on this.

As of February 2024, there were 88,646 federal civilian employees in the State of Florida. Ninety percent of them are POC’s. It was dictated long ago that if you’re White you don’t get a federal job. You just don’t. Now I know who these people are in Tampa who are driving around in seventy-five thousand-dollar pickup trucks at all hours of the day and night who don’t look a day over forty and don’t look like they have any kind of job to go to. Add to these the brand-new all shiny monster SUV’s, all driven by Black sistahs.

A lot of the jobs in the U.S. bureaucracy that are now contract jobs used to be federal jobs. They still have to be paid for, and they still act like termites.

Your stats do not include the government retirees with fat pensions. My Dad worked for the federal government for 35 years and retired at 55. He is now 91.
