President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly looking to privatize the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), three people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post in a report published Sunday.

Trump has made known his desire to detach the USPS from the federal government in conversations at his Mar-a-Lago estate, sources informed the outlet, including with Howard Lutnick, his commerce secretary pick and co-chair of his presidential transition team.

In early December, Trump also talked with a group of transition team officials to feel out their opinions on privatizing the agency, one person told the outlet.

As mail volume declines for the Postal Service, the agency has reportedly lost $9.5 billion in the fiscal year ending on Sept. 30, The Washington Post reported.

In addition to the Postal Service, Trump should be looking to privatize the Secret Service.

The Royal Mail in the UK has just been privatized...

Royal Mail takeover by Czech billionaire approved

I'm amazed the UK's Deep State didn't offer it up on a platter to the ChiComs.

There is only one line in the Constitution regarding the mail and that is the obligation of Congress establishing a postal system. Everything else in regards to it is Congress’s prerogrative.

In that sense, Fed-ex and email fits the obligation.

Suits me.

I hate it when I order something and I learn it's coming USPS. That's when I KNOW it's going to be,
1. Late.
2. Probably damaged.

It’s in the Constitution, but so is the defense of our country—and we sure outsource a lot of that!

Do you think that could turn ugly if a BIG donor started funneling money to them as a private entity?

Private carriers are less likey to steal elections. Firing every freak at the USPS will be a wonderful thing

Maybe Amazon can buy it. Have you noticed the difference in costs between what Amazon pays and what you pay retail for shipping at the PO and for that matter at UPS/FedEx?

Not that I’m defending today’s government-run, union-infested, P.O., but us little people should know that we’ll be last in their pecking order if they’re privatized, so don’t be surprised if the privatized version of the PO finds new and clever ways to screw us individual users as they likely won’t even want us around in the first place.

Dumbest thing Amazon did is to stop using ups and using usps. It’s a disaster in remote areas.

I wonder if the Postmaster General is just going to take this lying down?

I'm not so sure. Dominion is a private company. I used to be for privatization, but I have changed my mind. I think it is worth throwing some money away to have a system that is not in the control of an oligarch, holding company, or stockholders for things like legal service. Private companies will either be so regulated they may as well be public, or unintended consequences will creep in. For instance, there are addresses in Alaska that UPS will not deliver to. The USPS will deliver mail to every address in the U.S., territories and APO/FPO. I could see a UPS/Fed Ex letter delivery service charging $4 to send a letter to these areas. Before privatizing, dump Saturday delivery and gut the insanely complicated rules structure. Don't compete with UPS and FedEx for package delivery by discounting direct shipments from Red China facilitated by Amazon. More important, dump the subsidized bulk mail rates. Sell it for what it costs, rather than using it to subsidize a larger than needed work force delivering things most people don't want.

It would be the perfect to to address the problem of mail-in ballots.

BTW, anyone else in addition to me still stunned by people who would never dream of sending cash through the mail entrusting the USPS with something as precious as their vote...?

I’d say there’s an argument for every other day residential mail delivery. Do you really need the postman to drop by every day?

“It’s in the Constitution, but so is the defense of our country—and we sure outsource a lot of that!”

Exactly right. Reduce the department down to 100 overseers in DC and subcontract the whole rest of it out on bid. There are just too many problems with all those government workers who have too much personal power. There is no accountability, and you can’t fire them for doing poor and unproductive performance.

The worst problem is the normal government dept hierarchy. Just like the Dept of the interior, the local field office manager, “Postmaster” is lord and there is no accountability, appeal process, or way to go over their heads with issues. They are literally unchecked unquestioned Lords over their domain with absolute immunity and power to interpret laws like judges.

FedGov will have to ensure all areas are served.

As I understand FedEx and UPS don’t deliver everywhere, or at least that was the case a decade or so ago.

That’s what a friend who works at FedEx here in Memphis told me.

Of course this could easily be changed with a government contract.
