The US in particular has a lot of leverage. Trump has already stated he’ll flood Ukraine with weapons if Pooty doesn’t negotiate in good faith.

I have seen no news source attributing that statement to Trump. I believe it was attributed to Keith Kellogg.

The US does not have a bunch of leverage. Flooding the zone with weapons would not do much for an army suffering a manpower shortage. Ukraine would need bodies to go with the weapons.

Putin will negotiate in good faith until Ukraine agrees to give him whatever he wants, or until he already has whatever he wants. Time is on Russia's side as Ukraine is collapsing. Russia will will not accept any ceasefire with foreign troops on its Ukraine border. If that is what is expected, then Uncle Sam will have to draft an army capable of fighting a ground war over there.

Europe, without the U.S., can barely support itself. Militarily, the U.S. is NATO. And there is about zero support for a draft to militarily intervene in Ukraine.

Zelensky will get to choose between a bad deal now, or a worse deal later.
