Four years after Huntington Beach came to symbolize resistance to California’s pandemic-era mandates, “Surf City USA’s” shift toward staunch conservatism became complete last week, after three new members of the city council were sworn in on Tuesday.
Now, every seat on the seven-person council is filled by a Republican, and the members celebrated the milestone on Tuesday by donning red caps that said “Make Huntington Beach Great Again,” an homage to the famous “Make America Great Again” hats popularized by President-elect Donald Trump. The numbers “7-0” were emblazoned on the caps’ right side.
It’s a supermajority that Councilmember Tony Strickland has dubbed the “MAGA-nificent 7.” When asked if he considers it uncouth for a local body to identify so strongly with a national politician, Strickland told SFGATE he believes a double standard exists between the two parties.
“People certainly don’t have a problem when San Francisco identifies with Gavin Newsom or Barack Obama,” he said. “I think that’s a double standard if anybody has that kind of criticism.”
The dramatic shift in the board’s ideology is an example of a political strategy known as a “slate,” which occurs when multiple candidates run for multiple seats on a common platform.
In 2022, Strickland, Mayor Pat Burns, Mayor Pro Tem Casey McKeon and Councilmember Gracey Van Der Mark ran together for four open seats on a slate that became known as “the Fab Four.” They attended more than 100 campaign events together and sent out joint mailers, McKeon and Strickland told SFGATE.
