Lines of Russian troops in desert khaki greeted President Vladimir V. Putin in Syria in 2017. Declaring that Moscow had accomplished its mission in Syria’s civil war, Mr. Putin pledged that Russia was there to stay.
“If the terrorists raise their heads again,” he said on the tarmac of a Russian air base, “we will deal unprecedented strikes unlike anything they have seen.”
But over the last two weeks, as the rebels that Russia called terrorists swept across Syria aiming to topple one of Russia’s closest allies, President Bashar al-Assad, those “unprecedented” strikes were nowhere to be seen. Instead, with Mr. al-Assad’s ouster on Sunday, Mr. Putin has suffered one of the biggest geopolitical setbacks of his quarter-century in power.
He took that blow, analysts said, in large part because his military is bogged down in Ukraine.
“Our involvement over there had a cost,” a Moscow-based analyst focusing on the Middle East, Anton Mardasov, said, referring to Russia’s war in Ukraine. “The cost was Syria.”

They may have captured additional territory in the Donbass. Which is useless.
They already had Crimea before the war.
From my favorite source.
Slimes.
Slimes.
The Walter Duranty Times would NEVER lie to us.
Remember how they never lied to us ONCE in the run-up to the Crushing of "Faceload" Harris by The Trump this fall?
“ Gee, Russia suddenly has no military bases in the Middle East. Funny how that happened.”

They would likely be better off for that… at least financially. But actually I think I remember reading about them having a lease for a port/airfield there so who knows how that will work out. Maybe they’ll leave or stay like we stayed at Guantanamo in Cuba when Castro took over.
“Bogged Down in Ukraine, Russia Pays a Price in Syria”
Biden announced ‘aid’ to the new government in Syria. Likely BILLIONS of dollars. How about Russia? I don’t see them now blowing BILLIONS in Syria.
Sounds like we’re about to PAY a bigger price than than Russia will be, regarding Syria.
Hang on a second.
Isn't this the terrorist guy we have a bounty on?
Support for jihadi terrorists.
I did Nazi this coming from the O'Biden supporters of the Ukraine Nazi Azov guys...
But with Billions surely they will be our BFFs. It’s worked in the past, right?
Oh, Russia didn’t just lose Syria?
Sounds familiar
Bogged down? Ukraine is getting its ass kicked:

Given that Assad released a statement through Russian media that he wasn't going to contest the loss of Syria to the rebels, I think this is premature. It'll depend on how negotiations proceed with the new guys in charge (because at this juncture, I don't think it's been definitively proven that Russia has completely abandoned its Mediterranean bases).
Given how badly Assad apparently hollowed out his own army the LAST time Russia and Iran stepped in to save him from the rebels, it's possible they decided to cut him loose.
Speculation about long-term fortunes is one thing, but anyone making definitive claims at the moment about Syria should be more prudent (especially with how fluid things are).
I don’t care about who “owns” Syria. Did we lose Afghanistan?
I do care about FR being bogged down with Slimes crap.
Interesting how zeepers hold the same views as this Zelensky worshiper...
