Dade Phelan drops bid for third term as Texas House speaker

AUSTIN — Speaker Dade Phelan said Friday he will not seek a third term as leader of the Texas House.

Phelan was opposed by a majority of House Republicans, including many who will be serving their first term when the Legislature convenes in January, but had insisted for months that he would prevail.

Friday morning, he withdrew, potentially clearing space for a supporter, Rep. Dustin Burrows of Lubbock, to replace him in the race for speaker. Burrows filed paperwork to run for speaker Thursday.

Phelan did not endorse a candidate in his withdrawal statement.

“By stepping aside, I believe we create the best opportunity for our members to rally around a new candidate who will uphold the principles that make our House one of the most exceptional, deliberative legislative bodies in the country — a place where honor, integrity, and the right of every member to vote their district takes utmost precedent,” Phelan said.

Good riddance. It's too bad he didn't lose his primary this year. He may not be so lucky next time around. Phelan has lost his power in the Texas House.

He’s in a Southeastern district, which is surprising. I thought East Texas was saner than that.

He is a Phelan ally and would just be a carbon copy of his predecessor.

Must have been a nest of RINOS for him to have been Speaker for 2 terms. Sounds like the election remedied at least some of that.

A lot more information here: https://texasscorecard.com/state/phelan-withdraws-from-speaker-race-after-tumultuous-tenure/>.

From the above reference: "Phelan’s path to retaining the speakership narrowed significantly this week as more of his former allies endorsed State Rep. David Cook (Mansfield) for the position. Cook has thus far garnered support from a majority of the Republican caucus. The caucus is set to meet on Saturday to nominate a candidate for Speaker, with the winner needing at least three-fifths support from members."

"With Phelan stepping aside, establishment forces are pushing State Rep. Dustin Burrows for the position."

"In a statement, Attorney General Ken Paxton called Burrows 'Phelan 2.0.'"

When Phelan realized that he was going to lose, he withdrew so that the cabal of Democrats and RINOs would have a chance to elect RINO Dustin Burrows instead of Cook.

Although Texans continue to elect Republican majorities in the Texas House, all Democrats with enough RINOs have elected a RINO speaker since 2009. These speakers, in turn, appoint Democrats to key committees thus blocking Republican priorities.

Burrows is every bit as bad. He is another rat mole. They think they are clever swapping one rat for another. Don’t be fooled.

Phelan was the House leader that led the impeachment of Texas AG Ken Paxton. Paxton was acquitted in the Senate.

The Texas GOP establishment wanted a Bush in the position of AG and when Paxton beat George Bush they were not happy. Not happy at all. The Texas GOP establishment have been at war with the Texas GOP conservatives even more so than they have been nationally.

Paxton-supported challengers beat several GOPe incumbents last month so Phelan is seeing the writing on the wall and realizes he would be defeated in the House leader election tomorrow. The Bush family dynasty is dead and gone in Texas.

Replacing Phelan with a Phelan 2.0? Still no real conservative?

“Speaker Dade Phelan said Friday he will not seek a third term as leader of the Texas House.”

Excellent news! And make no mistake. Phelan isn’t just “stepping aside for the good of the blah blah blah...”.

He sees the MAGA writing on that wall... finally. Let’s hope he goes the hell away. Far, far away. And takes some of the other RINO traitors with him.
