MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A Chinese-owned fishing vessel with 18 crew members aboard was hijacked last week off the northeastern coast of Somalia, local authorities said Friday.
An official in Xaafuun district in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland, where the vessel is being held, told journalists that the hijackers include the ship’s security guards, who later joined forces with armed men from the coastal region.
The European Union’s anti-piracy naval force, Eunavfor Atalanta, brought global attention to the incident after issuing a statement on Thursday that confirmed the local maritime authorities had notified it and investigations revealed that armed men were in control.

I was surprised to see it is Taiwan flagged - it will be interesting to see how this gets resolved.

I am guessing this does not end well for the hijackers. The Chinese are not restricted by appearances like the West.

[the hijackers include the ship’s security guards, who later joined forces with armed men from the coastal region.]
Sounds like the ship’s security guards didn’t exactly earn their pay.

I was hoping the article would elaborate more on ‘the hijackers include the ship’s security guards.’

Wrong group - it was a Taiwanese vessel, not a CCP vessel.

Then it’s a Taiwanese vessel, not Chinese. Maybe the pirates were working with actual Chinese to hijack it.

An official in Xaafuun district in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland, where the vessel is being held... Soma ting wong.
After investigation, the event has been classified as *armed* robbery at sea
Makes sense. That's a one [armed bandit] if by land, *two* if by sea.

I would advise the Taiwanese to resort to gunboat diplomacy. Another option is manufacturing exploding smart phones.... they have the tech necessary.

True story. In a previous life, I was working for a well known Japanese company managing a construction project in Indonesia. We were plagued by pilferage of construction materials from our job site. Had a conversation with the boss who had been posted there long enough to learn the local language and culture.
He told me they could hire security guards for about 400 yen (less than $3) per day. Why don't we, I asked. We tried it, he replied, and the pilferage was far worse and more organized.

It's a Republic of China flagged ship,
not a People's Republic of China flagged
ship.
Beijing doesn't care and Taipei doesn't have the capability to project power so far

Isn’t that a long way from home to be fishing?
How far do fishing vessels travel from home ports?
I would think that eventually their ice on board would melt and their catch would spoil if at sea too long?

I don’t think the CCCP would be so brutal - they don’t have any experience in fighting since 1962.
The Russians would be brutal
