GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy draws primary challenger citing Trump impeachment vote [2026]

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., will face at least one primary challenger in 2026, with Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming announcing Wednesday that he will run for the seat held by the two-term senator, citing Cassidy’s vote to convict Donald Trump after his 2021 impeachment trial.

Fleming, a former member of Congress, said in a statement that Cassidy “has failed the people of Louisiana,”

“A number of Republicans walked away from President Trump in the last year of his first term,” Fleming said, “but those who turned their backs on him and America First were not committed to his fight to make America great. Louisiana citizens did not give up on this fight.”

Cassidy campaign spokesman Joe Ramallo said in a statement: “I thought he wanted to be State Treasurer? John Fleming wants to get out of Louisiana. He publicly said he wanted a job in the Trump administration, and apparently they didn’t want him. So after less than a year as State Treasurer, he’s looking for another job to return to Washington.”

Cassidy has not yet formally announced that he is running for re-election, but he told the Shreveport Times last month that he is "obviously working hard toward 2026.”

I was hoping for a 6 month moratorium on election articles. But, apparently we are going straight into discussions of 2026.

But, if we are to oust GOP RINOs and Never-Trumpers, I guess the earlier we start the better chance we will have.

I have no problem saying good riddance to the tick turd from Louisiana. I hope John Fleming is successful.

This also puts Benedict Cassidy on notice, will be politically awkward for him to openly go against Trump’s agenda and cabinet picks.

Maybe Team Trump told him the highest job he could perform for them would be to replace Cassidy in the Senate.

Joe says this like its something new. All of these people have their sights set on something higher. This is part of why I say, if someone is elected to a position and they want to target another elected position the day they register to seek that position they should be compelled to resign their current position. Show that you are serious. That said, I'm all for Cassidy being routed and Fleming should be free to pursue this, just show the courage of your convictions.

If Trump does well, starting in Jan 2025, then Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming will win this primary.

Exactly.
The democrats have bested us at this for along time. THEY are planning as far ahead as 2028. So, it’s time we learned- in politics, you can never get complacent.
We did good this year, but 2026 starts NOW.

This is good news because Cassidy will be very reluctant to vote NO on anything Trump puts forward. Trump is very popular in LA and Cassidy does not want to face angry GOP voters in the 2026 primary.

Cassidy is toast in the next primary. So is Cornyn.

Hopefully Tillis here in North Carolina will be too. We need to continue to purge RINOs in every single election cycle until there are no RINOs left.

Wish it was someone younger to challenge Cassidy. Perhaps Cassidy will not run for reelection.
