Penelope Hegseth, the mother of President-elect Donald Trump‘s defense secretary nominee, Pete Hegseth, defended her son after a 2017 email surfaced in which she claimed he had abused women.
The New York Times reported last week on the elder Hegseth’s email, in which she said, “On behalf of all the women (and I know it’s many) you have abused in some way, I say … get some help and take an honest look at yourself,” as the younger Hegseth and his then-wife were going through a divorce in 2017.
Penelope Hegseth said Wednesday on Fox News’s Fox and Friends that the email was written at a “very emotional time.”
“I’m sure many of you across the country understand how difficult divorce is on a family,” Penelope Hegseth said Wednesday. “There’s emotions. We say things, and I wrote that in haste. I wrote that with deep emotions. I wrote that as a parent, and about two hours later – My husband tells me I should think through things a little bit more, but Pete and I are both very passionate people. I wrote that out of love – about two hours later I retracted it with an apology email. But nobody’s seen that.”
Hegseth added that she and her son are “very close today” and emphasized that the email was from seven years ago. She also said she did not believe any of the allegations of sexual assault, excessive alcohol use, infidelity, or financial mismanagement, saying that she would not be defending him if she thought the claims were true.
“I am a passionate person like Pete, and sometimes emotional words come out,” Hegseth said. “I don’t believe any of that is true, any of it, and I’m here. I wouldn’t be sitting on this in this chair today if I didn’t believe that about my son.”
The elder Hegseth also said her son should be judged on who he is today, calling him a “good father” and a “wonderful son.”
“He’s a changed man,” Hegseth said. “And I just hope people will get to know who Pete is today, especially our dear female senators, that you would listen to him, listen with your heart to the truth of Pete.”
The younger Hegseth has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks after various allegations have been reported, and one report claims that Trump is considering replacing him with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) as defense secretary nominee.
Pete Hegseth has vowed to continue fighting to be confirmed as defense secretary as he meets with senators on Capitol Hill this week.
“I’m doing this for the warfighters, not the warmongers,” Hegseth said Wednesday in a post on X. “The Left is afraid of disrupters and change agents. They are afraid of @realDonaldTrump—and me. So they smear w/ fake, anonymous sources & BS stories. They don’t want truth. Our warriors never back down, & neither will I.”
Moms!
Ix nay!
LOL
Pete is a warrior - either to victory or going down fighting.that’s what the Warrior Class does, thank goodness.
Diaper fetish?
if she wants to help her son she should shut up
Using this letter against him was always bs.
RE: Using this letter against him was always bs.
It was an email. The curious cat in me wants to know how the media got hold of a 6 year old email....
Potus elect threatening to nominate DeSantis is brilliant. The pentagon may take Pete so they don’t have to deal with a REAL monster like Ron.
RE: if she wants to help her son she should shut up
She was silent until someone got hold of that 6 year old email and leaked it to the press.
It’s kind of too late now, ma’am. You helped end his secretary post.
You’re not wrong. She pretty much drove the final coffin nail. That which has been read cannot be unread. The press will never let go off this.
The question is which agency sent it to the NYT? Maybe Kash will find out?
This is all about Ukraine...again...”Trump Pentagon pick attacks UN and Nato” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/nov/25/pete-hegseth-book-attacks-nato-alliances The Deep State Rinos hate Hegseth because he doesn’t want to send our soldiers to the slaughter in Ukraine. It has nothing to do about drinking or his views on women..
Then the mother claimed that she immediately sent a follow-up email where she renounced her accusations in the first email, stating that they weren't true.
Now, the mother claims that Pete is a changed man. Why would Pete have to change if the accusations in the first email were false?
Logically, by saying Pete is a changed man, the mother is now claiming that Pete “belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego.”
The mother copied his ex wife.
I really resent vengeful people who use something like this that was going on at the time to destroy a career.
The mother soon apologized to him. I’m sure he acted badly but using your mom (briefly) siding with your wife during a divorce is crap.
Reminds me of when they harassed Newt because his mother said he called Hillary a bitch. Reporters: “Are you calling your mother a liar! “
Can you imagine what they call Trump.
She was GREAT!!
She’s feeding into the hype, and people give extra weight to what mom says.
RE: when they harassed Newt because his mother said he called Hillary a bitch.
That was the deceptive Connie Chung ( where is she now?) who slyly got it out of Newt’s mom in an interview.
CBS News anchor Connie Chung hosted a prime time news magazine called “Eye To Eye.” It was up against NBC’s “Seinfeld,” so it didn’t last very long. But in early January 1995, one edition of Chung’s show got a lot of attention. So much so, it pretty much ended Chung’s career as a national journalist.
At 70 years old, and not in the best of health, the Speaker’s mother was believed to be unaware that her whispered comment, said to be “just between you and me,” would be broadcast. Chung, on the other hand, said “I think she knew what we were doing,” indicating that the presence of cameras and microphones should indicate to anyone that their comments were “on the record.” Unless, critics said, they were told it was to be “just between you and me.”
You can watch the video here:
My nephew’s college professor used the video story above when speaking to college journalism classes, and it always sparks a lively debate.
Most participants come down on the side of Kathleen Gingrich ( Newt’s mom) , believing that she was tricked into revealing her son’s unflattering description of the then First Lady ( Hillary).
However, some believe that Connie Chung was doing her job as a reporter, getting a valuable piece of information regarding the House Speaker’s true opinion of Hillary Clinton. Newt Gingrich held nothing back. He called Chung’s broadcast “unprofessional, despicable and unfair.”
Personally, I think “Just between you and me” is pretty clear. There’s a big difference between “you and me,” and “let’s show this to millions of people.” And while Newt Gingrich was fair game, his mom really shouldn’t have been.
In this case, the bitch was Connie herself.
