Trump's plan for Ukraine comes into focus: Territorial concessions but NATO off the table

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Advisers to Donald Trump publicly and privately are floating proposals to end the Ukraine war that would cede large parts of the country to Russia for the foreseeable future, according to a Reuters analysis of their statements and interviews with several people close to the U.S. president-elect.

The proposals by three key advisers, including Trump's incoming Russia-Ukraine envoy, retired Army Lieutenant-General Keith Kellogg, share some elements, including taking NATO membership for Ukraine off the table.

Trump's advisers would try forcing Moscow and Kyiv into negotiations with carrots and sticks, including halting military aid to Kyiv unless it agrees to talk but boosting assistance if Russian President Vladimir Putin refuses.

There is no incentive for Russia to end hostilities.

All the weapons in the NATO arsenal will not change the course.

Russia has seized 80% of what they want. Ukraine is on the verge of collapse.

Only direct intervention by the US could change the reality on the ground, and that's a non starter in DC and Moscow.

I entirely agree with your assessment.

Truth be told, Ukraine isn’t worth the money spent. The Polish Ukranian’s can go to Poland leaving the Russian Ukranians to the Russians.

They should invite Russia into NATO, which Russia itself has proposed. The old purpose of NATO was to counter the USSR, It could be repurposed to unite the West. NATO currently opposes Russia, which drives Russia into the arms of Iran and China. Russia should be part of Europe. Asia can have Turkey.

Vlad will meet his stated objectives. The five ethnic Russian provinces are a given, basically picking up where the treacherous Minsk agreements left off.

That said, Trump’s first pick ( General Kellog) as Ukrainian envoy is puzzling…..Kellog was one of VP Pence’s chief advisors…..maybe President Trump is flushing out traitors?

The Polish Ukranian’s can go to Poland leaving the Russian Ukranians to the Russians.

I would imagine that is the Russians' ultimate goal - leave a rump western Ukraine that can be a haven for Azov nationalists, and a thorn in the side of Poland, Hungary and Romania.

To ensure Ukraine could never again be manipulated by outside powers, nor ever pose a military or political threat, Russia would need to take Odessa.

I can't imagine Russia ending the war without it.

Why would NATO want a member which is a de facto authoritarian dictatorship? C’mon, you cannot deny that Putin kills and imprisons his opposition; it’s well documented. Russia has never managed to have any kind of democratic government for any sustained period of time, at any point in its history.

“There is no incentive for Russia to end hostilities.”

You’re forgetting 1,000 to 2,000 dead Russians weekly.

Their mothers, fathers & siblings won’t.

Russia wants to end hostilities as long as there is a face-saving exit. The US could agree to no NATO membership for Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees from the US and/or NATO for the remaining portion of Ukraine.

Putin’s red line since 2007 was no NATO membership for Ukraine. Zelensky wants NATO membership as a guarantor o Ukraine’s sovereignty. It seems there are opportunities for a deal.

NATO was always off the table.

It was Billy Boy Clinton who reneged on the agreement with Russia that there would NEVER be a NATO power on Russia's doorstep.

Subsequently, both O’Bozo and Slow Joe continued to dishonor that agreement until we got where we are now

Russia gets the two areas defined in the referendums.

Ukraine gets a corridor for shipping...defined by Russia.

AND Russia offers Ukraine a new "long term" gas deal. Remember, Ukraine made a sh** load of money from the fees it charged for use of their lines by other countries.

And as solar and windmill prove inadequate and shipping becomes more expensive, it would be a gift to the EU countries....particularly Germany.

And let's do it right...not like Korea. Annex the two pieces to Russia proper....

There is no incentive for Russia to end hostilities.

Actually, there is.

If Trump is serious, we could send all our missiles and drones to Ukraine. Plus we'll send them additional air defense systems. That'll help Ukraine to give them the edge over Russia.

The MIC under the Biden Administration was never serious about helping Ukraine to win the war. That can change under Trump.

If Russia gets to keep the territory it conquered, then by all rights Ukraine should likewise be allowed to retain the territory (a slice of Kursk oblast) it seized.
