Syrian military launches counterattacks in an attempt to halt insurgents’ surprise advance

The Syrian military rushed reinforcements to the country’s northwest and launched airstrikes on a major city Sunday in an attempt to push back insurgents who seized the country’s largest city of Aleppo in a surprise offensive in recent days.

The insurgency, led by jihadi group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, launched their campaign on Wednesday with a two-pronged attack on Aleppo and the countryside around Idlib, before moving toward neighboring Hama province.

On Sunday, government troops created a “strong defensive line” in northern Hama, according to Britain-based opposition war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, as they attempted to stall the insurgents’ momentum. Meanwhile, jets pounded the cities of Idlib and Aleppo, killing at least 15 people, according to a group that operates in opposition-held areas.

The surge in fighting has raised the prospect of another violent, destabilizing front reopening in the Middle East at a time when Israel is fighting Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, conflicts that have repeatedly threatened to ignite an even wider regional war. It also risks drawing Russia and Turkey — each with its own interests to protect in Syria — into direct heavy fighting against each other.

The insurgents announced their offensive Wednesday, just as a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel began, raising some hope that tensions in the region might be calming.

The surprise offensive is a huge embarrassment for Syrian President Bashar Assad — whose forces have been fighting insurgents in a civil war since 2011. It comes at a time when his allies — Iran and groups it backs and Russia — are preoccupied with their own conflicts.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected in the Syrian capital of Damascus later Sunday.

Question: Are there any “good guys” in this conflict? I’ve read that there are Kurds who are victims, but not participants. Can someone explain what is going on in easy to understand terms? Thanks in advance.

Not sure why Turkey is still in NATO. We should quietly remove nukes from NATO and then kick them out.

Absolutely. Turkey needs to be booted out of NATO. The only reason Turkey was in NATO was to bottle up Russia in the Black Sea. Another reason Turkey is in NATO is because the rump of the British Empire - the soggy island of misfit toys, has had a mean-on against Russia for over 300 years now and cannot let it go.

Here we go again using Islamic terrorists, who have and will slaughter the Christian population, trying to foment a regime change in Syria.

A color revolution is also being fomented in Georgia.

We've gone from freeing other countries from communism under Reagan to causing wars, destabilizing nations and working with Islamic terrorists and neo-Nazis.

Nope. Scumbags all around. The only one's we should be protecting are the Christians, but until Trump is sworn in, that's not going to happen.

That’s the same bunch that pushed the Syrian “gas attack” lie.

“Who had the ability to create, and execute an operation on this scale?

The Syrian army has reported hundreds of phones, walkie talkies, radios, and other electronic devices have near simultaneously exploded in the hands of the military members using the devices.

Images are being reported from vastly different cities, with the explosions being nearly the exact time opposition rebels began taking Aleppo.”

“Not sure why Turkey is still in NATO. We should quietly remove nukes from NATO and then kick them out.”

Why? They are doing precisely what DC wants done. This current attack is solely designed to install Al Nusra (our guys) and depose Assad. Turkey was the shipping point for those supplies we sent to create ISIS. That’s where the fleet of white Toyotas came from. That was the shipping point where our Timber Sycamore program weapons were shipped from Libya. When we stole and broke off the oilfields, we send the oil into Turkey.

Turkey might as well get daily instructions from Langley.

That's why we should support Assad. Even though he's a bad guy.

The Israelis, once again helping sunni jihadi rebels and working to attack the defending Syrian Army. Notice the Israelis never dropped a single bomb in ISIS, but they constantly attack anyone fighting them.
