South Koreans oppose arms for Ukraine as envoy visits

SEOUL (Reuters) -South Koreans remain widely opposed to directly supplying arms to Ukraine, recent polls show, despite renewed international requests from Kyiv and allied capitals after North Korean troops were reported to be helping Russia.

Ukraine has asked Seoul for a range of weapons and Seoul has said it could consider such aid, depending on future steps by Russia and North Korea.

A Ukrainian delegation led by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov met South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday, Yoon's office said, amid media reports that the visit aimed to seek arms support.

"No to the South Korean government planning arms supply to Ukraine," read a banner held by a small group of protesters gathered outside Yoon's office in the capital.

Both sides agreed to keep up sharing of information on North Korea's dispatch of troops to Russia as well as the exchange of technology and weapons between the two, Yoon's office said in a statement.

The delegation also met Seoul's national security advisor Shin Won-sik and defence minister Kim Yong-hyun and discussed cooperation between Seoul and Kyiv.

More likely, the South Koreans realize that they endanger their very existence if they provide weapons that might kill the North Koreans they walk on eggshells with. You can’t talk how to reunite families with one group of North Koreans while carrying on a war against a different group. That’s throwing the eggs at a wall and not expecting any to break.

Love that country and people... my trip next summer is taking my adults kids there for 2+ weeks, being we are all KDrama fans... gonna rent motorcycles and hop down the west coast, around the southern end, hop a ferry to Jeju, then back up the east coast, then back to seoul/Inchon... being south korea is about the size of Indian, we should see a lot in the short time frame...

Easy to work around. Just give the stuff to Poland. SK is already selling lots of armaments to the Poles. The Euros can pay the SKs for the SK surplus arms. And the Poles have always been happy to ship arms to Ukraine.

Because the Poles understand the Russians thoroughly.

The one guy who saved Ukraine in 2022 was Andrzej Duda, President of Poland. And before that, and after, he had been under attack by corrupt elements of the EU - because he was not woke you see, and did not refrain from purging Poland of these corruptions. But he nevertheless opened his arsenals and armed the Ukrainians. It was Polish weapons that held the line at Kiev, at Kharkiv, at Izyum. He sent half of Polands tanks to Ukraine. He, single handed, shamed Europe AND the US into sending arms on a large scale - even if both the US and Europe have later ridiculously dithered. The Poles also maintain the principal logistics route into Ukraine, the have been providing logistical support, maintenance services, and training, and have been supporting the largest number of Polish refugees in Europe. And he saw this all coming years before, so Poland arranged for a Norwegian gas pipeline to bypass Russian gas. It was completed just in time.

That was Poland, not the richest or most powerful nation, but by far the most virtuous.

It was not “Pelosi” or “Biden” or whatever US boogieman you want to name. Other people exist in this world, it does not all revolve around US domestic politics.
