Just some of the reasons to think the feds were trying to cap Trump:
— As below, Thomas Crooks was in regular contact with someone who was also spending time around the FBI
— Crooks practiced shooting at a range popular with feds
— Crooks was using a sophisticated messaging system associated with intelligence
— Crooks had built a pipe bomb, which at this point, as @MikeBenzCyber notes, is basically a feds-only contraption
— Researcher @I_Am_JohnCullen has provided very compelling ballistics evidence indicating there were at least two assassins in Butler
— The Secret Service refused to clear Crooks before Trump took the stage, despite multiple warnings
— The Secret Service refused to ensure there were no lines of fire on Trump in Butler
— The Secret Service subsequently refused to release all of its records related to the attempted assassination
— The FBI was caught spreading disinformation about the alleged assassin
— The feds were warned about Ryan Routh but as usual chose not to intervene
— Routh was very obviously working as a CIA asset, having been arrested dozens of times, including for possessing WMDs, but magically got off every time
— Biden DoJ announced an indefinite delay in prosecuting Routh, very likely to avoid messy details from emerging
— FBI later made a big deal about arresting an Iranian they claimed was plotting to kill Trump, even as evidence indicates he was being baited into an attack, and the Iranian govt took the unusual step of assuring the feds they weren't trying to kill Trump.
No one wants to dig into this because the implications are too stark. But this kind of trepidation also explains how the CIA is able to continue covering up records related to the JFK assassination — despite a law compelling their release — and Republicans in Congress just carry on like everything's hunky-dory.
To me it seems the feds thought they could take out Trump because they've always gotten away with it in the past.

Not to mention when Crooks’ home was searched it had been wiped clean and sterilized. Even the silverware was gone.

I hope Trump just stays in Mar-a-Lago until the inauguration. Even then, I would prefer that the inauguration was held in the rotunda of the Capitol with a big celebration at an indoor Arena. No parade. He already had all that outdoor stuff. Groups like Shut Down DC are already gearing up to disrupt.
On a side note it appears that the CIA and the FBI has evolved into a single agency, at least the corrupted and the criminal side. It was many years ago (maybe two decades) and can’t recall specifically who was behind it but can remember somebody in congress was trying to assemble a consensus to ‘build a wall’ legislation between these two agencies. It never happened and look we where are at today.
I hope that DJT is very wary of staff and has special consideration of his food & drink being unmolested.
