A secret strategy paper clearly outlines the role of the economy should Putin attack in the east. The German army has concrete suggestions on how companies should prepare themselves.
A new secret document, reported on by Germany's FAZ newspaper, spells out what this would mean - particularly for German businesses.
The 1,000 or so page document lists every location - from bridges to power plants - that could be vulnerable to an attack in the event of a more direct confrontation with Russia.
Earlier this year, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius warned that Germany must be ready for the possibility of war with Russia - following the full scale invasion in Ukraine - by 2029, prompting the plan. The concerns are that the conflict could escalate in future.
"We must not believe that Putin will stop at Ukraine's borders," he said at the time.
The outline known as 'Operationsplan Deutschland' (Operational Plan Germany) currently circulating to businesses, envisions Germany being a key state for the transport of troops an equipment to countries on the eastern flank like Poland and the Baltics - as well as food and medicines. Officials believe this could make Germany a particular target of Russian missiles - even if the frontline were closer to Russia's borders.
Civil and military defence
The paper reportedly recommends a host of civil defence measures - which would include prescribed actions for both businesses and individuals to be more war-resilient - alongside military defence.
For starters, each company is urged to train at least five extra truck drivers, noting that more than 70 percent of all truck drivers in Germany are from Eastern Europe and may be likely to return there in the event of a war.
Bundeswehr generals advise companies to have their own electricity generators - and to ensure all employees receive safety training - in case electricity grids are knocked out.
The report also notes Germany's lack of preparedness for a confrontation with Russia at the moment - pointing out that Germany is producing three tanks a year versus Russia's 25 per month. It also warns of the possibility of high-level assassinations in companies and frequent drone overflights, sabotage, and cyber-attacks. The report refers to this as "shaping the battlefield" on the part of Russia.
Generals, citing intelligence sources, say there is the possibility of Russia being willing and able to attack further west in four to five years.
The Bundeswehr report also recommends additional hiring of emergency services personnel - and infrastructure employees. Hamburg has already created 40 more positions at its port.
Fire crews and German soldiers have also already conducted joint exercises simulating attacks - or sabotage attempts - on critical infrastructure like Hamburg's port. If hit hard, an attack on Hamburg's port could disrupt the flow of goods and supplies coming into Germany, which could lead to shortages both for Germany's civilian population and the war effort further to the front.
The state would also reserve the right to reintroduce food rations and stamps to combat shortages.
As extensive as the document is, the Bundeswehr notes that it is a "living" plan - one that will need to be frequently updated over time as new facts come to light from how the Russians are waging war in Ukraine - particularly around the effects of ever-evolving drone and electronic warfare.
What does Germany recommend residents do to prepare?
The Bundeswehr recommends residents in Germany stockpile food and other key supplies - noting that grocery stores like Lidl and Rewe could be hit with attacks to the electricity grid in the event of war activity - preventing them from opening.
People should have non-perishable items too because electricity cuts could see outages to refrigeration.
In general, the German Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance recommends that people stockpile food and drink to last them 10 days in the event of any type of emergency. Households should stockpile around 14 litres of liquid per person.

This is classic “fighting the last war” thinking that has doomed the military generation after generation.
There is zero chance Putin would attack Germany by land.
If there is war it may be over in less than an hour.
Pure fiction and propaganda with no other meaning. Decades of skimping on defense spending mean that the Bundeswehr is not remotely in shape to do anything other than support US troops.
Let’s see
Berlin police declare Berlin is not safe for Jews and homosexuals
German Govt prepares companies for war
Germany supplying Ukraine missiles and ammunition to shoot into Russia
Where have I seen this movie before?
Laughable.
As with Biden-Harris being dumped for Trump-Vance, the coalition government in Germany is teetering now, and so the picture in the article is BRILLIANT.
A couple of soldier with a weapon on a horse. There's a "winning strategy," eh?
I hope the U.S. does not decide to be involved. IMO, U.S. should get out of NATO on January 21, 2025
Agreed.
Were that to happen, the fancy fat cats atop the NATO bureaucracy would quickly find out they are not funded to enjoy their perks and all.
Seems like someone calling themselves "Pistorius" (or something similar) posts here...
;^)
When do they give all the 12-year olds a Panzerfaust and tell them to go out and guard the bridges?
I know...I had to look twice and be sure it wasn’t a babylon bee type site.
Over in an hour is what Putin thought when he invaded Urraine. Maybe not an hour, but he probably thought Ukraine would not fight, and it it did, it would be over in a couple of days.
If Putin had nuked Ukraine it would have been over in an hour.
Ground wars are always messy.
Somehow I read that as Budweiser prepares Companies for war
Does “FAZ” mean “fake?”
At first glance I thought that read Budweiser prepares company for war.
From your "goof" in the first post, I looked at the Frankfurter Allegeime as well, since we read it sometimes when residents in Germany. To see the current crop of German politicians huff and puff as their coalition government teeters is just sad. And Green as well.
I watched the Bundestag day when Weidel of the AfD and Wagenknecht once of Die Linke both spoke, some hours apart and with right and left vocabulary. They both said rather the same thing, in different political terms, but both pro-German for Germans, as the coalition government EU-toadies are allowing German industry to wither and recession to envelop the nation. This moment in Germany saddens us. Scholz and Habeck and Baerbock are now quite like bit players in a Babylon Bee article. And for that opinion, were my wife and I still resident in Germany, the police would come knocking on our door for ridiculing politicians.
