We all know that a lot of nonsense courses at American colleges are stuffed with pork ... but now that's literally true, because the University of Maryland is offering a spring semester course on "fat studies."
"Intro to Fat Studies: Fatness, Blackness and their Intersections" is taught by Dr. Sydney Lewis, and is advertised as follows:
The course examines fatness as an area of human difference subject to privilege and discrimination that intersects with other systems of oppression based on gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and ability. This course will particularly highlight the relationship between fatness and Blackness. We approach this area of study through an interdisciplinary humanities and social-science lens which emphasizes fatness as a social justice issue. The course closes with an examination of fat liberation as liberation for all bodies with a particular emphasis on performing arts and activism as a vehicle for liberation and challenging fatmisia.
FYI: Fatmisia is a term that relates to the hatred of fatness.
This read to me like someone took every woke word in the woke dictionary and just printed them in random order.
Lewis is a senior lecturer at the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and students who enroll in her course will earn three general education credits.
Richard Vatz, a professor at a nearby university, said this area of study was "kind of a laughable, laughable subject" and "just ludicrous."

I don't think if you went into a job interview and the interviewer said 'what have you taken recently?' and the respondent said 'well, I'm taking a course in fat studies, but the intersection of a blackness and fatness,' that this would put you in a position to get much of a job, so the utility of this and the job market is probably pretty questionable

In all fairness, “fat studies” should be taught by their college of medicine, with introductory classes open to the general school population. Truthfully, it is hella complex, and should actually provide upper division credits.
The biochemistry involved is staggeringly complicated, but fascinating to the public as a whole. Intertwined with the labyrinthine immune system, two different biomes (upper aerobic and lower anaerobic), genetics, and dietary studies.
If properly done, it would actually mean something instead of just being DEI bulldada.
One has to be really, really a hard up racist to attend those classes being taught by Sistah Pork Chop. The OD frozen turkey wrap makes me think she might be a Stolen Honor poser.
I hope they include fatheads in their studies.

This is why the hue and cry about the “uneducated” voting for Trump is absurd. There are valid reasons for higher education, but they have to do with one’s focus on becoming a doctor, lawyer, etc. Even those professions won’t guarantee that you’ll vote for the best person to be POTUS. Then there are all the less serious and, worse, patently ridiculous degrees, none of which makes anyone more likely to be a wiser voter than a convenience store clerk or a truck driver.

What an absolute scam. The only people “smart” enough to create such stupidity are the college professors. DOCTOR? By sitting through 8 years of these stupid “studies” classes? And lets face it. Colleges push unqualified black students who would have been fine at a state college in to these useless “hate whitey” courses. Two days without power and that doctor would be eating the drywall in her apartment.
UofMD is my alma mater, and I am so ashamed at how far it has fallen.
They’re already starting off on the wrong foot by using the word “fat,” when so many anodyne, self-reassuring, happy, unicorn-ish phrases are available.
Betting the course won’t cover the most pernicious kind of fat: that between the ears.
