Starmer rules out re-running general election as petition passes 2.4 million signatures

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has ruled out calling another general election, but said he is “not surprised” some people who did not support Labour might want a second poll.

A petition on Parliament’s website calling for another election had by Monday night been signed by more than 2.4 million people.

“I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead-up to the last election.”

Asked about the petition on ITV’s This Morning programme on Monday, Sir Keir said: “Look, I remind myself that very many people didn’t vote Labour at the last election.

“So, what my focus is on is the decisions that I have to make every day.”

He characterised decisions taken so far by his Government as “tough but fair”.

Sir Keir and his ministers have faced a particularly strong backlash for limiting winter fuel payments to only the poorest pensioners.

Because the Tories imploded and split, Starmer and Labour have 411 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons. A new election is not required by law until August of 2029. Starmer isn’t going anywhere.

The Conservatives and Reform need to bury the hatchet and form a united opposition well before then.

The Tories are led by guys like Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney while Reform is led by a clone of Donald Trump (Nigel Farage).

Budget cuts/”austerity” are always a tough sell...coming soon to the USA (Jan. 20)...at least $2 trillion needs to come off the $6.3 trillion federal budget to work on the $1.7 trillion budget deficit and paying down the national debt. (Not to mention Social Security & Medicare/Medicaid).

Starmer needs to look at British history.

It is a story of bigger snd tougher over throwing the unpopular head of state.

He has no idea what an angry mob would do.

Labour won lots of seats with a plurality, as the vote was split between Conservative, Liberal, and Reform. Most people were not happy with ruling Conservatives, but Labour is worse.

The voters had to throw out the ruling Conservative Party even if it meant that the Labour Party was going to take control. And yes, they're much worse than the Tories.

The “Conservatives” are like the RINOs in the USA; since they side with Labour, they will not “bury the hatchet” with Reform unless they’re purged.

“…strong backlash for limiting winter fuel payments to only the poorest pensioners.“

Leave some of the the most vulnerable citizens to freeze while there is money in the budget for other political priorities. Amazing that anything comes before them.
