NC Senate joins House in overriding Cooper veto of voucher expansion-immigration enforcement bill

North Carolina sheriffs must comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests with the passage of House Bill 10 over Governor Roy Cooper’s veto Wednesday.

The bill will also funnel more than $2 billion to the state’s Opportunity Scholarship school voucher program over the next decade — expanding the program to allow students of all income levels to receive taxpayer funding for tuition at private schools in the state.

The state House of Representatives voted to override Cooper’s veto by a 72-44 margin Tuesday, with three Democrats joining all Republicans present in favor. On Wednesday, the state Senate followed suit, overcoming the veto with a 30-19 vote.

Cooper vetoed the bill days after its passage in September, calling private school vouchers “the biggest threat to public schools in decades.” He has since framed his opposition to the veto override effort around insufficient aid to western North Carolina, calling on lawmakers to put the billions this bill will use to fund school vouchers toward Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.

I don't understand how Cooper was elected Governor in a state where the State Representatives are mostly conservative. However, at least they have sufficient votes to over-rule his vetoes and thus get their legislation in place.

More from the article:

“The North Carolina Association of Educators decried the bill’s passage in a statement Tuesday, warning that the state’s public schools would suffer as a result.

“Spending billions of taxpayer dollars to fund private school vouchers while public schools remain underfunded, while public school educators are asked to do more with less, and as the western part of our state is still recovering from the devastating impact of Helene is irresponsible,” said Tamika Walker Kelly, the association’s president.

In contrast, Andrew Yates, the president of ALEC Action — the advocacy arm of the conservative American legislative Exchange Council — issued a statement praising the vote. “By overriding this veto, the legislature has empowered families to break free from a one-size-fits-all system and embrace true educational freedom, ensuring every child has a chance to thrive,” Yates said.

The new requirements for North Carolina sheriffs include an expansion of the circumstances in which they must check the immigration status of detainees, a requirement to withhold bond and turn over undocumented immigrants to comply with ICE hold orders, and protection from civil and criminal liability for these actions.”

He sounds more like the president in a parliamentary government. He can show up at parades and cut ribbons on new buildings.

I wish the Republican supermajority in the House and Senate in this state would stuff constitutional carry down Cooper’s throat.

If a private school accepts government money you can be sure it will come with (more) government rules, so is the school private or a government school?

Cities elect the governor and they are hotbeds of voter fraud.

Does anyone know if the GOP retained their supermajority?

And Republican voters fall for it every da** time. Notice the articles disappeared once Robinson’s number fell. Their job was done and they knew Robinson would never recover. Heck, anyone can be paid to say a web presence they created belonged to someone else. There was actually no evidence that Robinson had done or said those things.

But the left knows how to push conservative voter’s buttons. That’s why every accusation to derail a conservative involves sexual behavior. There just has to be an accusation. The media does the rest (See Gaetz, Matt for a current example).
