Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) endorsed Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears (R) for governor on Monday ahead of the state’s gubernatorial race in 2025.
“Winsome has been an outstanding Lt. Governor, and she will be a great governor,” Youngkin wrote in a post on X.
“She has been an outspoken advocate for commonsense conservative principles and policies, a passionate voice for our military and veterans, and a relentless advocate for educational freedom and economic opportunity. She brings the fighting spirit of a Marine to the office every single day,” he said.
Sears was elected lieutenant governor in 2021 when Youngkin was running for governor. Virginia governor’s are term limited to one year four year term.
Sears, who announced her candidacy in September, is the only Republican running in the primary so far. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R ), who was elected alongside Youngkin and Sears in 2021, said on Monday that he would run for reelection instead of running for governor. His announcement gives Sears a clearer pathway to the nomination.

Methinks Youngkin is a “Plan B” for Trump if any of his appointees don’t make it.
Wish I could vote for Winsome Sears.
I think so. Trump/Vance should campaign for her. We need to turn Virginia into Pennsylvania.
Sears is a Great American.
Born in Jamaica, so not eligible for POTUS.
Where’s Youngkin going? He just took office 3 years ago?
Winsome?
Win some MORE!
Well, she’s black. I understand a lot of liberals believe that plus a vagina makes one not only capable but destined to rule regardless of their DNA.
I tried to Winsome Sears, but it went out of business and there was nothing left.
OK, to be sirius, Sears is a good choice, and gives a conservative non-male a chance to build a political career which could itself eventually make its way into the White House. It also frees Youngkin to work in the Trump administration, and perhaps run for the Senate to make VA red again, or at least reddish purple.
“The commonwealth has never had a female governor, making a potential match-up between Earle-Sears and Spanberger historic. Earle-Sears would also be the first Black female governor in U.S. history.”
She is awesome and a hardcore Trump supporter.
Term-limited: one four-year term
“Where’s Youngkin going? He just took office 3 years ago?”
Virginia law allows for a governor to serve multiple terms in office - however, they cannot be consecutive.
In short, it’s one term and you’re done.
The last person to serve non-consecutive terms as Virginia’s governor was Mills Godwin. He was elected as a Democrat in 1965 and served thru the end of 1969. He became governor again in 1973 (elected as a Republican) and served ‘til the end of 1977.
Virginia governors are one and done. They can come back for another term, but not consecutively so Youngkin would always be looking for another job now. However, from my perspective, had he focused more on this job during the 2023 Virginia midterms instead of listening to BS consultant whispers about him being a national dark horse, we might still have a Republican legislature for him to have left behind.
She’s a good pick. Youngkin will eventually join the Trump administration, did he name an ed secretary yet?
And can she help turn Virginia red in ‘28 for Vance?
Didn’t she issue a groveling apology for “misgendering” a trans? If so, what does she now have to say about that?
I hope not. Youngkin is way too "E" for my taste.
We should try to avoid identity politics, of course. But we should celebrate our party’s “big tent” characteristics when it occurs naturally. And that’s where Sears comes in.
As you noted, Sears is a good choice for VA governor.
Now the bad news. She was born in Jamaica, which makes her ineligible for future consideration as president. But she is a former Marine. Maybe Secretary of the Navy? Or senator?
She can win.
She’s a black Jamaican 1st generation American, former Marine (I know, no such thing as a former Marine.), sharp as a tack, well respected, no scandal, anti-woke but not a culture warrior.
However it’s Virginia and Youngkin was elected because of the school board issues in Northern VA and sexual assaults they allowed to continue in girls bathrooms. He was a revenge vote as much as an actual win and his opponent was Terry Mcauliffe (The horrificly unlikable Clinton bag man.).
Who knows how Trump will be hampered with BS charges and BS scandals. Maybe there will be so many displaced Federal employees in Northern Virginia that Loudon and Fairfax counties go even more blue (If that’s possible.).
